The formula for totalitarian regimes suppressing popular protests has become really easy.
1. Wait for the Russians to glom onto a political movement (ignore the fact that they’re usually trolling both sides)
2. Claim that the movement is therefore a Russian conspiracy
3. Treat is as a foreign plot
4. Connect the whole thing to Facebook. Use it to push internet censorship.
The same tactics that the Russian Communists and the German Nazis used to suppress political dissident is now the standard toolbox of the illiberal leftist parties of the West.
The Yellow Vest protests have gotten big. So it’s time to play the Boris and Natasha card.
France is investigating Russia’s alleged role in promoting the so-called Yellow Vest movement after recent reports suggest Moscow-linked news outlets spread false information about the protests.
French security services are looking into whether Russian outlets boosted hashtags promoting the protests, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a Sunday local radio interview. His comments come after reports showed that 600 Twitter accounts pushed the anti-carbon tax protests.
Of course they did. For the own interests. They also boosted Black Lives Matter. And a hundred other fringe political movements. It’s funny how the Left only focuses on this when it intersects with the Right. And by funny, I mean cynically totalitarian.
