From the American vantage point, WW2 was a massive conflict between the Allies, Nazis and the USSR. It was in many ways though a continuation of the nationalistic tensions that led to WW1 and the conflict zones between Russia and Germany often had more in common with the middle eastern territories shredded by the Islamic conflicts of the past decade. Up close, there were micro-conflicts, local tribal battles with varying sides allying with the Nazis or the Communists. And genocide was not an uncommon outcome.
