This invasion has little to do with any Russian empire rebuilding.
Putin HAD to invade Ukraine at some point or another using any propagandised pretext.
Simply, Russia could not let Europe (or US energy companies) gain access and exploitation of one of the largest untapped energy reserves in the world …..which just happens to be in/off the eastern Ukraine territories.
European access to this vast energy resource would mean future bypassing and non-dependency of Russian energy to Europe thus lessening both revenue to Russia and its energy stranglehold over Europe. That is why Putin had to invade and must win the war in Ukraine or at least effectively secure/maintain total control over eastern Ukraine and Crimean waters with its energy reserves,
