Once I heard of this hypothesis 20 years ago, all of the historical facts that are verifiable fell into place, in my mind. Unfortunately for Christians, the same is true for Jesus, however revered he is. The same methods must be applied for all historical figures, even those you like.
No epistemological equivalency at all between Muhammad and Jesus. Even secular historians are agreed on the fact of Jesus’s existence.
You should read Lee Strobel’s THE CASE FOR CHRIST.
It’s not as much about the person as it is about the ideology.
And the ideologies are judged by their results.
Which ideologies followers have prospered and which ones are living miserably?
That’s how one finds out which one is real and which is the failure.
Islam would be on top of the list for all failed ideologies.

There is so much uncertainty about Mohammed that it is hard to see how far one can get in unravelling all that. When fabricating the legend they must have plagiarized from existing texts to some extent. Also, when fabricating a legend from 200 years earlier it is even more likely to be inaccurate than fabricating a legend from the 1800s since we have some written records, etc. So fabricating the legend of Mohammed must have involved some psychological projection.
Also, reading Richard Burton about Islam in the 1800s, they must have collected some local legends from various places when fabricating the legend of Mohammed back in the 900s etc.
