After 90+ days of rioting in Portland, the riots are actually beginning to hurt Democrats in the polls and undermine their White House bid.
So Governor Kate Brown of Oregon has announced a bold new plan to arrest and lock up rioters.
Governor Kate Brown today released the details of a unified law enforcement plan to protect free speech and bring violence and arson to an end in Portland
First there are several paragraphs of virtue signaling about right-wing provocateurs. Followed by the incredibly right-wing proposal to lock up violent rioters and keep them locked up…
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute serious criminal offenses, including arson and physical violence.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office will work with system partners to hold individuals booked for violent behavior, and to ensure that there is adequate jail space to hold such individuals.
In other words, the DA will stop letting rioters off the hook and they’ll actually stay locked up in the interim.
After 3 months, the various parties in the law enforcement and criminal justice system have agreed to do their jobs.
The rest involves bringing in additional police and assuring them that they’ll be reimbursed and that books will be thrown.
As done previously, Oregon State Police will detail personnel and resources to Portland to free up the Portland Police Bureau’s investigative capabilities to arrest and charge those engaging in violent acts
The OSP had previously pulled out of Portland because the DA’s office was refusing to prosecute thugs. So really, points 1 and 2 are a concession to the OSP.
Is any of this actually going to happen?
DA Mike Schmidt is a Soros appointee. And he’s made a point of dropping charges against the rioters. So don’t too hard on it. Recently, Schmidt did make a point of securing one single conviction.
Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced Thursday that 18-year-old Rollin Tristan Fodor pleaded guilty to first degree arson, a felony.
It’s the first felony conviction connected to the more than 90 continuous nights of protests in Portland stemming from the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
And the best part is…
Fodor was sentenced to 160 hours of community service, 36 months of probation and 45 days in jail, which he’s already served.
Time served.
So don’t expect this to go anywhere. Brown’s plan is going to run into the simple problem that Portland is run by lefty lunatics. The rioters are on the inside of the system. Wheeler has good odds of being beaten by an even worse radical.
Brown’s plan to have the authorities do what they should have done 90 days ago is all but doomed.
