That sound you just heard was the entire DNC screaming, “Never” in unison.
Hillary Clinton says she’s under “enormous pressure” to consider a 2020 White House bid but it’s “absolutely not” part of her plans right now.
“As I say, never, never, never say never,” Clinton told BBC Radio 5 Live host Emma Barnett when asked Tuesday if she was ruling out another political run. “I will certainly tell you, I’m under enormous pressure from many, many, many people to think about it,” the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee continued.
“But as of this moment, sitting here in this studio talking to you, that is absolutely not in my plans,” Clinton, 72, said.
Hillary already sent up trial balloons. But it’s an open question to what extent she’s serious or is just trying to stay relevant.
Ex-candidates command a lot less for their speeches than future presidential candidates. Ditto for the book deals and the media coverage. That may explain the coyness.
On the other hand, Bloomberg has signaled that he’s getting in. Deval Patrick, Obama’s candidate, may be jumping in. Why not Hillary?
Aside from all the obvious reasons.
What looked like a crowded and powerful field imploded the way that the 2016 GOP clown car did. The race is down to three candidates with huge weaknesses. Except that, aside from Deval Patrick, the new candidates aren’t a good fit for exploiting them.
Hillary Clinton has the charisma of Elizabeth Warren and the politics of Joe Biden. That’s the worst of both worlds. Yes, maybe she could break Biden’s black voter firewall and drag away some of Warren’s older wealthy female lefty voter base. Maybe. More likely she would destabilize Joe Biden and pave the way for a Warren nomination. And that might be exactly what she and Warren have coordinated.
But, most likely, this ain’t happening. Still, to quote her, never, say never. And I’m sure everyone will be thrilled at the rope lines, the pre-posed photos, and the shambling Bill back on the campaign trail.
