“Most Canadians Are Now Better Off Than Most Americans,” Bloomberg contends.
Canada’s unemployment rate is 5.7%. America’s is 3.7%.
Then there’s income
“Taxes can also be a key differentiator for the two countries. Canada has a higher average practical tax rate than the United States at 28%. Business Insider reports that after taxes Canadians bring home $35,299 annually on average. In the United States the practical tax rate is lower at 18%. As such the average post tax annual salary in the U.S. is $52,344.”
But at least Canadians can wait a year for “free” hip replacement surgery.
Anyway, people tend to vote with their feet.
In the last few years, an average of around 19,000 Canadians obtained permanent residency status in America. Around 9,000 a year obtained American citizenship.
Meanwhile the media was touting underwhelming increases in US migration to Canada.
2,615 U.S. citizens were granted permanent residency in the first quarter of 2018. That’s the highest number since Q2 of 2008, and the third-highest monthly total in this century.
In the five quarters we have data for since January 2017, an average of 2,342 Americans were granted permanent residency, compared to an average of 2,131 per quarter between 2007 and 2016.
Keep in mind the population differentials between the two countries.
Hollywood socialists keep threatening to move to Canada. But they like their gated mansions in Santa Monica too much to leave. And they don’t actually like paying higher taxes. And have no interest in waiting a year for hip replacement surgery.
This is not meant to insult Canadians.
But lefties keep insisting that America is a terrible place. And yet everyone seems to want to come here.
