There have been plenty of signs that Rep. Ilhan Omar is politically vulnerable.
Despite being a standard-bearer for the ‘Squad’ and for a lot of lefty Dems, moderates hate her and so does her own community. If you’re an Islamist or even a traditional Somali Muslim, you see an adulteress who married a white guy. About the only people, Omar is going to be popular with is wokes. And the Democrat establishment which backed her.
Her narrow primary win against a moderate black pro-police candidate shows what a missed opportunity just passed for moderate Dems to clean up their party.
“With every advantage in the race, Ilhan Omar narrowly emerged as the winner of Minnesota’s Fifth District (Minneapolis and inner ring suburbs) DFL primary yesterday. She defeated challenger Don Samuels by 2,500 votes out of nearly 113,000 votes cast (2.1 percent). “
Scott Johnson of Powerline, who’s been covering Omar forever, paraphrases Orwell and notes that, “Covering the special endorsing convention that Sunday, I saw that the party activists who endorsed Omar were among the woke left successors of “every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, ‘Nature Cure’ quack, pacifist, and feminist” identified by Orwell as the fans of Socialism and Communism in England. They make up Omar’s base, and it is substantial base, but she is not invulnerable.”
What does this mean for Republicans? Probably nothing considering the makeup of the district. But there’s going to be a marked lack of enthusiasm for Democrats who will vote Omar not because she’s popular, but because she’s on the ballot. An effective Republican could make use of that.
That overturns the whole premise of the Squad, that they represent a populist insurgency not another establishment rubber stamp for a terrible candidate.
