Just another day in Venice Beach.
Two things about what’s going on here.
1. Venice Beach has become an eyesore due to what is often described as a homeless crisis. But that’s a political term. The area is overrun by junkies with assorted mental problems, but they’re often younger and whiter than your average homeless. Many are ‘crusties’ or hipsters in their twenties who are often described as voluntarily homeless and enjoy the lifestyle.
It’s hard to know if this woman fits that category, but she appears to be young and blonde. Your average homeless vagrant is in their 40s to 50s and male.
2. Calling a rally to address the crisis in Venice, as ex-cop Councilman Joe Buscaino did, all but invited one of the locals to show up.
And that’s what seems to have happened.
Bucaino finished a short speech and was shaking hands with people when Nico Ruderman, a Venice resident, said he saw a homeless woman standing behind Buscaino and holding a knife.
“She said, ‘I’m gonna start killing people,’ and I jumped forward and grabbed Joe,” Ruderman told the Los Angeles Times.
Private security guards drew guns and hustled Buscaino into an SUV and police officers detained the woman, the Times said. The woman yelled that she had the knife for protection and to cut fruit, the paper said.
The woman was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Her name wasn’t immediately released but several people at the event said she lived on the boardwalk and called herself Angel, the Times reported.
In a statement, Buscaino said: “This is exactly why I was in Venice Beach today, charting a new course for our city, and I am convinced now, more than ever, that bold action is needed to make our city safer for everyone, regardless of housing status.”
LA needs to stop subsidizing homelessness which is, as I recently chronicled, a profit center for Democrats.
Homelessness is not, for the most part, a housing issue. It’s a junkie and mentally ill vagrant issue. The facts and the numbers back that up. But the homeless-welfare complex will go on ignoring all this because it creates a whole lot of jobs. For them.
