Unable to make much headway on crime due to state laws and woke bureaucrats, Mayor Eric Adams instead decided to pick a fight with the Governor of Texas.
Is it a smart move?
In California, Governor Newsom has built a possible presidential run on picking fights with more succesful conservative states, especially Florida. Despite running an ad campaign in Florida, Newsom has mostly been ignored by Gov. DeSantis.
Adams however succeeded in attracting Gov. Abbott’s attention in Texas leading to a bus of illegal aliens. And more posturing.
Mayor Eric Adams and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott traded barbs — and blame — Monday following the latest arrival of asylum-seeking Mexican-border migrants relocated from the Lone Star State to the Big Apple.
Adams accused Abbott of being “anti-American” for “shipping” busloads of migrants to New York City in response to what the Republican governor calls President Biden’s “open border policies.”
“Be a true American,” Adams said during an unrelated news conference at Corona Flushing Meadows Park in Queens.
“This is a place where the Statue of Liberty sits in the harbor. And we say, ‘Bring us your tired, those who are yearning to be free.’ And that’s what these asylum seekers are doing.’”
Is Adams really this stupid or this a distraction?
Adams isn’t all that bright, but he’s a canny enough retail politician, and so I would suspect he’s trying to change the subject. And it won’t do him any good.
The venn diagram of New Yorkers who want a fight with Texas, but aren’t so lefty as to hate him on sight, is on the small side. His core base wanted him to fix crime and the general malaise and misery of the De Blasio era. And Adams has shown no sign of being willing or able to do it. Distractions may work for Newsom, but they won’t work for Adams.
