Outgoing President Joe Biden urged incoming President Donald Trump to learn “decency” from permanently outgoing former president President Jimmy Carter. Biden once set his sights high by trying to compare himself to FDR and JFK, now has to settle for being the second Carter.
On his way out the door, the media continues to insist that Biden is a good man. And that Carter, despite presiding over one of the worst administrations in history, was a good man.
Biden and Carter had many things in common, record unpopularity, crooked brothers, and empowering Islamic terrorists, but decency was never one of them.
Joe Biden was not a good man. Neither was Jimmy Carter.
Carter ran for office promising an administration “that’s turned away from scandal and corruption and official cynicism and is once again as decent and competent as our people.” That was a lie.
That “new morality” turned out to be a corrupt triangle between Billy Carter, Jimmy’s version of ‘Hunter’, a drunk who peddled foreign influence and mismanaged the family business, only to be bailed out by the National Bank of Georgia, whose president Bert Lance, was a Carter appointee, adviser and head of the Office of Management and the Budget.
Lance was forced to resign and was indicted on charges of bank fraud in a trial that required testimony from Carter’s mother and involved accusations of improper loans to family members.
Peanuts from the Carter warehouse were being used as collateral for loans from the bank complete with forged documents allowing the family business to sell the ‘collateral’ and a special counsel was appointed to investigate whether the dirty money found its way into the Carter campaign funds. The media argued that the actions of his brother and OMB director had nothing to do with Jimmy Carter. Even when Carter expressed his support and pride for Lance.
When Billy Carter shilled for Libya, the media also claimed it had nothing to do with his brother. And then Jimmy left office and began shilling for so many dictators that the full list would run for pages. Over the course of his long retirement, Jimmy Carter not only met with Gaddafi, who had paid his brother $220,000, but with Zimbabwe’s Mugabe, Kim Il Sung of North Korea, Venezuela’s Maduro and Hugo Chavez, Syria’s Assad and Fidel Castro in Cuba.
And Carter not only met with them, he loved them and covered up for them. He claimed that he “never doubted Hugo Chávez’s commitment to improving the lives of millions of his fellow countrymen” and on Castro’s death remembered “fondly our visits with him in Cuba and his love of his country.” The more people Jimmy’s tyrants killed, the harder he hugged them.
Jimmy Carter loved terrorists and so he not only embraced Arafat, but also Hamas.
In April 2008, Jimmy Carter met with Hamas and claimed that the Islamic terrorists wanted to live in peace with Israel. The next month, as a peaceful gesture Hamas fired a rocket at an Israeli shopping mall, wounding 90 including a mother and her 3-year-old daughter.
But the more tyrants and terrorists Jimmy Carter met with, the more he built up his reputation as a good man just trying to fix the world. But Carter wasn’t fixing the world by empowering some of the worst mass murderers in the world, he was continuing to break it and make it worse.
Carter met with mass murderers responsible for starving half a million people to death and then with terrorists aspiring to take over countries like Israel not because he wanted to stop the violence, but because he wanted to dial it up further by providing them with legitimacy.
Jimmy’s ‘Carter Center’ claimed to monitor foreign elections while sanctioning corrupt leftist takeovers like the one in Venezuela which led to protests, starvation and mass migration to America. His activities on behalf of enemies like Saddam Hussein and North Korea went well beyond lobbying or even violations of the Logan Act and into a territory of outright treason.
That included contacting world leaders and urging them to oppose the United States and making announcements in America’s name at meetings with foreign leaders. A normal D.C. lobbyist would have gone to prison for half the things that Carter did. And no one except a former president wearing the media mantle of sainthood could have gotten away with it.
Why did Carter go to such trouble for Saddam Hussein and North Korea? Why did he go on a fundraising mission for the Islamic terrorists of the PLO? While Carter claimed to be a peacenik, tens of millions of dollars were pouring into the Carter Center including from foreign governments. Long before the Clinton Foundation, Jimmy Carter had built a massive foreign influence machine under the guise of a humanitarian operation that “came to him in a dream.”
Even Habitat for Humanity, a key element in the rebranding of Carter as a humanitarian, couldn’t escape the sleaze when he led efforts to cover up sexual harassment at the organization.
It wasn’t the first time that Carter let out the lust in his heart and protected sexual abusers.
Biden’s mass commutations for murderers and rapists shocked a nation, but before him Carter had pardoned Peter Yarrow, of the group, Peter, Paul & Mary, for sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old girl.
Jimmy Carter had covered for tyrants and terrorists who had murdered entire populations. Compared to that, what was the worth of the life and innocence of a single teenage girl?
The worst thing about Carter was the way he had of converting his crimes into virtues. Unrepentant until the day of his long-delayed death, Carter and his defenders always claimed that everything he did only came about because he was too trusting and forgiving.
Any other man with that the same political and family corruption, the cronies and associates who ripped off businesses and the country, the parade of terrorists and dictators, would have been denounced, but Jimmy Carter beatifically smiled, acting as if his ties to sinners made him that much more of a saint, and that embracing evil was evidence of his moral superiority.
The worse Jimmy’s monsters were, the more he acted like he was saving their souls.
Joe Biden could only dream of wearing that same fake religiosity that Jimmy wore through the White House and to Havana, Pyongyang and Caracas, or of a post-presidency redeeming himself by courting the world’s monsters. Biden may have been the second coming of Carter, but the stars aligned so that the first coming concluded weeks before the second coming was done.
Jimmy Carter has gotten a bad rap. Unlike Joe Biden he wasn’t a criminal. Unlike Barack Obama he did not foster racial division. Jimmy Carter was an honest man who wanted to do good. He believed that the United States should be more humble, be one nation among other equally sovereign nations. He believed that the Palestinians had a right to exist. I didn’t agree with him about those things at the time, but I do now. however incompetent a President he may have been, and I’m not at all sure he was incompetent, after George W. Bush and Barack Obama and Joe Biden he is looking pretty good.

I was alive when Carter was president. Every week was a disaster. I have not forgotten stagflation or the hostage crisis in Iran. I wish Daniel Greenfield had mentioned that! Thank you. The last couple of days I’ve had to continually suppress my gag reflex what with all the tributes to Carter. I’m old enough to have been an adult throughout his presidency. Even went to his inauguration since I lived in D.C. at the time. To me he was always just a sanctimonious, anti-Semitic, fool. Even back then the Israelis had a joke about him. It went like this. Carter was on a world tour and stopped in a Hong Kong tailor establishment. He bought some fabric he liked but couldn’t stay long enough for the suit to be made. So at his stop in the UK he took the fabric to a Seville Row tailor and asked if he could make the fabric into a suit. The tailor said, “Dreadfully sorry, old man, but there simply isn’t enough fabric here for me to make you a suit.”. Carter left and flew to Paris where he had a nearly identical experience. Then it was off to Israel. He found a tailor in Jerusalem and asked Moshe the tailor if he could make him a suit. Moishe said ” Sure, you wanna three piece suit? And I’ll make you a second pair of trousers.” Carter is flabbergasted. He says to Moshe, “I don’t understand. I’ve that same piece of fabric all over the world, to the finest tailors and they’ve all told me there isn’t enough fabric for them to make me a suit. Yet you tell you can use it to make me a three piece suit and an extra pair of pants. How is that possible?”. Moshe the tailor looks at and says, ” Mr. President Carter, in Israel you’re not such a big man.”

I remember some of the “highlights” of the Jimmy Carter years: runaway inflation (gold went from around $100 to $800), banks charging interest rates at around 15%+, U.S. hostages held in Iran for about 440 days (they were released the first day that Reagan took office), Jimmy blurting out on live tv that he lusts in his heart after women (thanks Jimmy, but that’s more info than we need to know), and then there was a newspaper picture of Jimmy in a row boat defending himself by swinging the boat’s oar at an attacking animal – the animal turned out to be some poor water logged rabbit.
For those who missed the Carter years because you weren’t born yet, you just saw a rerun of those four years with Biden in the white house, except Biden did much more damage to our country – Biden & Carter – the worst and the 2nd worst Presidents ever.

You forgot the long gasoline lines of 1977, which resulted from a fake oil shortage. The “shortage” began suddenly, without warning, and lasted for several weeks, as I recall. We were still reeling from the OPEC embargo of October 1973, and were all scared that the scarcity of gasoline would continue indefinitely. It soon became clear, however, that the oil companies had schemed to withhold oil in order to raise prices yet again. It worked, and no one was ever held accountable. Thanks, Jimmuh.

Was in the military back then. Carter and the Democrats defunded the DoD so bad that we had shortages of parts, paper, and even replacement uniforms. We were burdened with 15% mortgage interest rates, sky high rent, and skyrocketing inflation, E-5’s qualified for food stamps. Ronald Reagan was a Godsend.

Wasn’t it on behalf of Carter’s reelection that Ted Kennedy went to the Russian embassy and asked them to create a crisis that would frighten people into voting for Carter instead of the supposed maniac Reagan? I’m sure he didn’t do that without Carter’s blessing, if not Carter’s request.
Ted Kennedy did oppose Reagan in 1983 by asking for a meeting with Andropov in Munich to arm the Soviets with arguments against Reagan to use in nuclear discussions. The meeting did not happen.
Dealing with professional politicians is dicey. Moving targets, they are forever adjusting their ‘principles’ to match the temporary company, like a chameleon matching its background. Then there are the smoke filled back rooms where deals are made.
I’ve never seen a politician leave office as a poor man/woman. OK, maybe there are a couple that got caught.

Ex-presidents get money because Truman did not have much, yet Eisenhower was the first to collect. Truman and Hoover were still alive, but not covered.
Jimmy Carter was my favorite of all the really terrible Democrat presidents in the 20th and 21st Centuries. He did less harm than Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Clinton, Obama, and Brandon. The poor man had so much competition in the race to be worst he didn’t have much of a chance.
The competition for worst president is stiff. Biden soared to the top, aided by the press.
My first vote for president was Carter, because he openly avowed Christianity but what a mistake I made. Even though I was still registered Democrat, I voted for Reagan twice. I’d never cared much for Tump and all his showmanship but came to the conclusion that I wasn’t voting for a pastor in 2016.

True story: Back in 1981, I was a sophomore at UC Berkeley. In our dorm was a child of a famous and extremely wealthy and powerful person whom I should not name. I will call the famous dad JW and the son FW. Reagan’s inauguration was taped and shown that night on national TV. JW called his son FW and told his son to watch the news. To make a long story short, we saw Reagan approach JW (either walking away after the ceremony or the inauguration room) and then, with JW on the other end of the phone, he told FW that Reagan said to him, “I’m going to bomb the shit out of Iran tomorrow.” I remember thinking at the time, that it did, in fact, look to me like he mouthed those words. And BTW, earlier that day, they asked Carter if the hostages had been released and Carter replied, “Not yet. Not yet.”
Because of that experience, I have to conclude that they released the hostages because of Reagan.

It’s an odd thing: when I read the news of Carter’s death, I felt nothing. I felt neither love nor hate, sadness nor anger, just nothing. Which about sums up his life’s worth: worthless.
I remember Jimmy Carter when he came to Emory campaigning for Governor against Carl Sanders, a former Governor, WWII combat aviator, and named partner in a major law firm. Sanders had grown up poor in Augusta and took his GI bill and made it to the top. Carter called him cuff links Carl in the campaign and hit the surface class distinction hard. Jimmy Carter was ambitious and slick as a greased pig. He played being a nuclear engineer and farmer into the Governors Mansion. It was a harbinger of his Presidential ambitions. As Governor he was kept on his toes by the Lt. Governor and former governor,, Lester Maddox, scourge to the left and racist by reputation.
A former GA State Senator of my acquaintance and who sat next to Jimmy Carter in the Senate and like the man personally related that his nickname in the Senate was “deputy dog”. He was obviously not a good old boy and after his Presidential run had a short memory for favors he received during his campaign from supporters.
Jimmy Carter had the ingredients for Presidential greatness, a borderline genius IQ and a clean past. His weakness was a spiteful nature and lacking a Reagan gift for common sense. Carter supposedly supervised the use of the Whitehouse tennis courts and carrier an empty piece of luggage onto Airforce One to show his common touch.
Some of his appointments of old cronies, viz.Bert Lance caused scandals as did his brother.
Carter was blessed with double the IQ of Biden and still managed, on occasion, to get his hands soiled.

My father was, unfortunately one of those people. The good news was that Carter turned my dad back into a Republican pronto. Permanently.

Most of my parents generation could have said the same.

I believe you forgot to mention how he loved to carry his own suitcase to show he was a “man of the people”. It was later revealed that his suitcase was always empty.
I was 1 year too young to vote against Carter. His presidency firmed my resolve to NEVER vote for a dem again. Today, age 65, I have not voted for any “d”rats. (Although I must admit, too many repubs are rinos and screw America as bad as the dems.) My RED state Senator is one of them.
If there was anyone who needed to read this article, it was me. While I was never a big supporter of his, I always did believe that he was “a good man”.
I lived in Canada for all but the last month of his administration (and, no, I was never a draft dodger – I was 14 when i moved there, with my family, in 1973.). so most of what I learned about Carter was as seen through the eyes of Time magazine.
Finally, my eyes have been opened.
