Let’s just say it, progressive politics is dumb. And these days it’s heavy on promises to change the world by getting experts, activists, and stakeholders together to look over thick blue binders and then issue a press release.
Remember Obama’s, “this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal?”
LA’s Mayor Garcetti had an even more ridiculous oceans moment.
This week, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed his 10th executive directive called “Vision Zero,” which will pursue the goal of ending traffic-related deaths by 2025.
“We have to think big and work hard when it comes to keeping people safe,” said Mayor Garcetti in a recent release. “It is tragic that 200 people are killed each year while moving about our city. With more people walking and biking than ever before, we must use every available tool to save lives. I am determined to bring that number down to zero.”
Garcetti is off to serve as ambassador to India, and 200 people are no longer being killed each year. It’s 289.
According to Los Angeles Police Department data through Dec. 25, 289 people were killed in traffic collisions last year, 21% more than the same period in 2020 and 19% over the same period in 2019. A total of 1,465 people were severely injured, a 30% increase over the same period in 2020.
Count on the government to promise to bring traffic fatality deaths down to zero (a complete impossibility) only to have them rise by nearly half.
But there’s a constituency for the government making stupid promises (we’re going to end hunger, poverty, and traffic deaths) with the utopian politics of a leftist movement that thinks anything is possible, including overriding human nature and physics, if they protest hard enough.
Leftist politicians lie and leftists want to be lied to.
