I don’t know about you, but this question is bound to keep me up nights.

After Clayton Lockett, who buried a teenage girl alive after shooting her with a shotgun, got the ouchies during his execution, death penalty opponents fought for this baby rapist and killer.

But he went under the needle anyway.

In its first lethal injection since a botched one last spring, Oklahoma executed a convicted killer with a three-drug method also used by Florida for an execution the same night.

In an execution Thursday that lasted 18 minutes, Oklahoma inmate Charles Frederick Warner showed no physical signs of distress after the lethal drugs were administered, although he did say, “My body is on fire.” He was declared dead at 7:28 p.m. CST.

When asked before the execution began if he had any final words, Warner responded: “Before I give my final statement, I’ll tell you they poked me five times. It hurt. It feels like acid.” At that point in the execution, Warner would have been receiving a saline solution and not any of the lethal injection drugs.

A number of media reports are going with the “acid” lead without noting that he was only on saline solution then.

Warner’s attorney, Madeline Cohen, who witnessed the execution, said in a statement there was no way to know if Warner suffered because the second drug, a paralytic, would have prevented him from moving.

“Because Oklahoma injected Mr. Warner with a paralytic tonight, acting as a chemical veil, we will never know whether he experienced the intense pain of suffocation and burning that would result from injecting a conscious person with rocuronium bromide and potassium chloride,” Cohen said.

If a babykiller experiences pain under a paralytic, does it make a sound? Is this supposed to be a Zen thing?

Are we supposed to have a psychic standing by to talk to his ghost and find out if he experienced any pain while dying?

Incidentally here’s what led Warner to his slot.

Charlies Frederick Warner brutally raped and murdered 11-month-old Adrianna Waller. An ER nurse observed bright red blood around the victim’s rectum. Dr. Choi determined the cause of death to be multiple injuries to the victim’s head, chest and abdomen. The victim’s jaw and three ribs were fractured, her liver was lacerated and her spleen and lungs were bruised. There were bruises on the victim’s chest the size of adult fingertips.

If only we could know whether “he experienced the intense pain of suffocation and burning”. But I think a higher power might be taking care of that.
