Leftist comedy is inherently unfunny. But watching leftist comedy eat itself is funny.
The latest bit of unintentional comedy comes from Comedy Central (so edgy) censoring an episode of The Office. No, the old NBC sitcom didn’t show Mohammed. The problem was an episode titled Diversity Day which, as it so often did set up Daily Show alum Steve Carrel as the epitome of the clueless white man who doesn’t realize how racist he is. Diversity Day ought to fit perfectly into the anti-racism universe of Robin DiAngelo lectures about how racist white liberals are except that its way of making that point was by invoking stereotypes.
And so it had to be eliminated.
What this really shows is the split between leftist culture in 2005 and 2021. The 2005 lefties could invoke stereotypes to turn them around on their white targets, while comedy in the 2021 culture wars is so monotonous that it can’t even head fake a turn from the agenda.
The real joke here is the cultural autophagy of leftist comedy going back in time to eliminate itself. At this rate everything in the culture before the trending Year Zero will have to be censored.
