After a federal judge issued a ruling ordering the federal government to stop “specifically flagging content or posts on social-media platforms and/or forwarding such to social-media companies urging, encouraging, pressuring, or inducing in any manner for removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing protected free speech.”
The lefty censorship lobby responded with pages of unhinged hysteria that failed to address the issue.
Conservatives were repeatedly accused of trafficking in false conspiracy theories to achieve this outcome. But if so, then why worry about the verdict? If the Biden administration isn’t actively urging, encouraging, pressuring, or inducing social media firms in any manner for removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing protected free speech, what could the problem possibly be?
Secondly, lefties and their media claimed that barring the government from advocating censorship was interfering in its free speech.
Here’s the government-funded NPR complaining that, “the government’s ability to fight disinformation online has suffered a legal setback that experts say will have a chilling effect on communications between federal agencies and social media companies.”
A chilling effect generally applies to government suppression of speech, not the suppression of government censorship.
“It’s hard to think of a more sweeping ruling,” says Evelyn Douek, an expert on the regulation of online speech and a professor at Stanford Law School.
“The injunction enjoins tens of thousands, maybe hundred [of] thousands of federal government employees from having almost any kind of communication with private platforms about content on their services,” Douek tells NPR. She notes that while there are exceptions for certain types of criminal content, overall, the “clear message is to have this sort of chilling effect on communication between the government and platforms.”
Actually, it’s pretty clear about what government employees can and can’t do. They can do most things like send a pineapple to Facebook by courier or ask it to remove pro-ISIS propaganda, what they can’t do is “specifically flagging content or posts on social-media platforms and/or forwarding such to social-media companies urging, encouraging, pressuring, or inducing in any manner for removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing protected free speech.”
Pretty clear.
The term ‘Orwellian’ gets thrown around far too much but here the Left has decided to argue that preventing government employees from censoring people has a chilling effect on their speech. One wonders what the old ACLU or any 1960s liberal would have made of that argument.
Big Tech used a variation of this argument to Florida bans on internet censorship, but the government doesn’t even have a platform. It and its allies are fighting for the right to go censorsing.
Good one Daniel. That fits in with my theory that the leaders need a dissenters channel. When they only get one view, the views of their sycophants, the end is likely to be disaster, as with Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, caused by his sycophants painting a false picture for him. But that is what the government is trying to do by censoring conservatives, to only allow the voices of their sycophants to be heard.

A couple of thoughts:
1) To fight disinformation shutdown NPR. I’m sure Soros and his allied foundations have enough money to keep it going.
2) How will the judgement be enforced? Democrat Attorneys General seem to pick and choose which laws they will enforce.
The Left, most certainly including the government supported NPR are ludicrous. First, EVEN if posts were “untrue” the government has no legal authority to censor them. Didn’t these people ever take a civics course? Second, they ignore that government agencies are free to put out contrary information if something posted online bothers them. What the government can’t do itself or through an agent is censor information it doesn’t like or disagrees with. Third, not that it matters but much of the censored material was factually true. These people have zero regard for our Constitutional system and, indeed, want to destroy it.
The government is appealing this ruling. Meanwhile saying they didn’t censor anyone. wow.

What was it, 20 years ago the dems were pitching fits because Bush was wanting to set up a propaganda operation directed overseas during a shooting war. The question, obviously, is whether the government should be allowed to work on censoring content that is maliciously spreading falsehoods that clearly harm individuals.
For instance, the lies propagated on this forum (and many others) regarding the effectiveness of COVID vaccines directly harms the people who believe them. Almost 90% of COVID fatalities since 2021 were unvaccinated.
For better or worse, propagating lies is, by and large, protected by the First Amendment. So it is very much an open question whether the federal government should be pressuring Twitter or Instagram to refrain from propagating malicious, harmful lies.
Obviously, someone like Daniel Greenfield, who makes a living maliciously propagating harmful lies, would try to oversimplify an issue that is very much not simple.
Stop The Steal.
The question, obviously, is whether the government should be able to maliciously spread falsehoods that clearly harm individuals and censor the truth in violation of the first amendment and countless other laws.
For instance, the lies propagated by the government regarding the efficacy of dangerous Chines covid drugs, which are NOT vaccines. According to the ever reliable CDC, 98% of deaths attributed to Chinese covid were actually caused by comorbidities and the vast majority of dead had been “immuynized,” often multiple times.
For better or worse, propagating lies is by and large protected by the first amendment, And the Dirtbagocrats do so non stop. So it is very much an open question whether or not the federal government should be pressuring Twitter and Instagram to censor the truth and propagate malicious and harmful Dirtbagocrat, left-wing lies.

I am curious about the purported vaccine. I was as Polio Pioneer in third grade. We beta tested the Salk vaccine. That actually was a vaccine. Not a billionaire creating hoax based upon ex cathedra assertions, tort liability exemptions, contra Constatutional mandates, prevarication and censorship.
