The Oval Office confrontation Friday between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump and Vice President Vance was a classical political Rorschach Test. It was either a much-needed and long-delayed smackdown of an arrogant and entitled authoritarian who demanded U.S. aid to continue a war he could not win, or an unprovoked and unwarranted dressing-down of a valuable U.S. ally by a narcissistic and short-sighted pawn of Vladmir Putin. Only one of those perspectives has the facts behind it, however, and the left’s knee-jerk embrace of the anti-Trump, anti-American point of view is as revealing as it was predictable.
Apparently writing through his tears, MSNBC’s Senior Editor Anthony L. Fisher on Friday served up a typical leftist spin on what happened, after first announcing: “I’m feeling some unusually visceral thoughts about my country. Betrayal, anger, embarrassment. Shame.” He noted that “we’ve already heard Trump praise Russian President Vladimir Putin (many times) and call Zelenskyy a ‘dictator.’” And now, “Trump and Vance’s display in the Oval Office presented America to the rest of the world in a dramatically shameful light, making it plain that our government is no longer a worthy ally to liberal democracies around the world.”
In a similar vein, far-left Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Orange Man Bad) offered a detailed blow-by-blow account of the entire incident, concluding that “the whole meeting is a set up. By pushing this plan to hand Ukraine to Putin (IN FRONT OF ZELENSKY!), Trump is trying to either humiliate or provoke Zelensky. But he does neither, and so Vance has to light the match.” Neocon warhawk Bill Kristol reposted a photo of Zelensky with Trump, along with the caption: “The Leader of the Free World, sitting next to Donald Trump.”
Conspicuously absent from every leftist attempt to spin the Oval Office incident was any genuine recognition of the points Trump and Vance were actually making. As National Security Adviser Mike Waltz explained to Zelensky after the confrontation: “Time is not on your side here. Time is not on your side on the battlefield. Time is not on your side in terms of the world situation, and, most importantly, US aid and the taxpayers’ tolerance is not unlimited.”
This was an amplification of one thing Trump said to Zelensky amid the imbroglio: “We gave you, through this stupid president, $350 billion. We gave you military equipment. Your men are brave but they have used our military equipment. If you didn’t have our military equipment, this war would have been over in two weeks.”
Trump’s point was that Ukraine would have been quickly defeated without help from the United States, but even with that help, he said, “You’re not winning this. You have a damn good chance of coming out okay because of us.” He was giving Zelensky a grim but realistic assessment: he couldn’t defeat Russia, but he could come out with an acceptable settlement if he agreed to Trump’s ceasefire terms. Without America, however, despite all the bluster and indignant support for Ukraine coming from European leaders, Ukraine would be thoroughly defeated. On Saturday, Zelensky demanded $250 billion from the EU if the U.S. ended its support, but it’s not at all clear that even the Europeans are so keen on prolonging the war that they will hand over that much money.
During the Oval Office confrontation, Trump behaved with perfect consistency. From the beginning of his political career, he has put the interests of Americans first, and continues to do so. He isn’t interested in pursuing the endless and inconclusive wars that the U.S. has fought, at a tremendous loss of lives, money, and materiel, ever since the end of World War II. The war in Ukraine is shaping up to be just that kind of boondoggle, as Zelensky has no way to win it or to sustain his victory, no matter how much money he receives. So Trump made it clear on Friday that the U.S. is no longer a cash cow for every world leader who comes to the Oval Office demanding funds. The president is going to look out for the American people first.
For the left, that is the worst thing Trump could possibly do. From their socialist internationalist perspective, his America-First position is wrongheaded, obstructionist, and recklessly counterrevolutionary. They would rather see America bankrupted than a reconsideration of the disastrous foreign policy strategy the nation has pursued for 75 years. And so they side once again against Trump and for the continued draining of the resources of the American people. There was never any doubt that they would.

The Democrats are bragging that they met with Z before the WH visit and to tell him not to sign any agreements, so, Z came into the meeting acting like Brainwashed Fool! Europe is such a joke. They have had 10-11 years to take security and Ukraine seriously. They continue to buy Russian oil & gas, which fuels their war machine. In the last few years they took tiny steps. Send old tanks and even some aircraft but limited their use (but don’t fly over Russian territory or use these missiles in Russia)
Even now they send more money to Moscow than they spend on Ukraine. They also haven’t taken their own defense seriously. The US has prodded them for years and years to spend more on defense.
Even when they try to talk tough it’s comical. Today Starmer said he would send “boots on the ground” (fine print: When the war is over and they need some ‘peacekeepers’). If they had sent some peacekeepers and equipment after 2014 the second invasion would never have happened.
The UK is said to have fewer than 50 operational main battle tanks. I am sure Czechia and Ireland will lead the invasion of Russia. lol. Seriously, Europe is a big joke.

Trump’s critics complain that Trump wants to give Putin Ukraine territory to end the war, thus rewarding Putin for launching this war.
What is the alternative?? An accelerated war to try to push Putin out of Ukraine would be a disaster. Continuing a hopeless war of attrition would be a disaster.
Sometimes, you need to find the least bad option. In this case it is land for peace to stop the killing. Negotiate as little land as possible.
Trump was proposing essentially a DMZ along the border, an “economic zone”, where the US would establish its businesses. This would present a US barrier along the border.
It is understandable that Zelensky wants a security guarantee. But Trump’s “economic zone” could be much better.
As Zelensky points out, every security guarantee in the past has been useless, most notably the 1994 guarantee. And a European security guarantee without the US is even less useful.
In exchange for Ukraine giving up their nuclear weapons, the US signed the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances in 1994. This agreement includes security assurances against threats or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine. When Russia seized Crimea, Obama ignored these security assurances. Putin ignored the 1994 agreement again when he went into Donbas. Then Biden said a “minor incursion” would be OK. One could argue that Trump’s “economic zone” is much better than a guarantee on paper.
What does Putin get out of the agreement? Only some of Donbas and a “guarantee” that Ukraine will not join NATO. Is this enough to push him back to just Crimea and a small part of Donbas?
The real issue is that everyone else is playing checkers while Trump is playing chess. What I think many people don’t get is that by establishing a DMZ zone or an economic zone along the border with American companies involved, if Russia dare to launch any kind of attack of any kind on that economic zone, it will be construed as an attack on America which would invite a devastating retaliatory attack on Russia.
Russia doesn’t want to go there because despite having nukes, the Russian military is no match for the US military and they know it as does the rest of the world.
As for Zelensky, he’s no madman or ruthless dictator. Far from it. What he is, is an incompetent B-list actor/comedian who’s in way above his level of competence and intelligence.
People need to stop making him out as some evil genius. The man is an imbecile and it sticks out like a sore thumb. The fact that the Ukrainian people elected Zelensky as their leader says more about them than it does about Zelensky.
Personally, I think that EU oligarchs are behind him becoming the leader of Ukraine. Zelensky is their tool/fool to draw America into a hot war with Russia. A war they themselves have no ability to wage let alone win. If not for American presence, Russia could easily conquer all of Europe and the opposition would be token at best.

Well said. An American economic zone in Ukraine is worth more than 100 NATO agreements. Putin would probably love a conflict with NATO while the US sits on the sidelines. Goodbye Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, etc. It’s laughable to hear about the UK led alternative to Trumps proposal. The UK doesn’t have enough troops to fill Wembley stadium and that’s probably more than the rest of the Euroweenies have. And they sure as hell don’t have the money to dish out like we did. The fact that all of the socialist governments of Western Europe are siding with Zelensky confirms in my mind that this whole Ukraine situation is nothing more than a trap to start a war between Russia and the US.
Ever since Russia abandoned communism for a freer system, the Left have been out to get them. Ukraine was their bait, to suck Putin into a war with the United States.
Of course, the other side of the coin is that they want to suck the United States into a war with Russia. They hate Trump, and they hate America as originally constituted.
It’s possible that the EU oligarchs want the US to fight their war with Russia knowing Russia stands no chance against the US and wants Russian oil refineries as a concession. If they want those so badly, they can do their own fighting and dying and blowing taxpayer money for them.
