The left is really doing a fantastic job of embracing the best practices of the “abusive, predatory capitalism” it claims to rally against. WeWork employees get the best North Korean treatment.
Co-working giant WeWork Cos. thinks it can save the environment quicker than Elon Musk.
The startup has told its 6,000 global staff that they will no longer be able to expense meals including meat, and that it won’t pay for any red meat, poultry or pork at WeWork events. In an email to employees this week outlining the new policy, co-founder Miguel McKelvey said the firm’s upcoming internal “Summer Camp” retreat would offer no meat options for attendees.
“New research indicates that avoiding meat is one of the biggest things an individual can do to reduce their personal environmental impact,” said McKelvey in the memo, “even more than switching to a hybrid car.”
Individuals requiring “medical or religious” allowances are being referred to the company’s policy team to discuss options.
Or WeWork could reduce its environmental impact by shutting down. And Miguel McKelvey can reduce his investment in mountain top homes.
It’s arrogant paternalism of the highest order for a billionaire American co-founder, one whose own personal carbon footprint is surely in the top 0.1% of global citizens, to impose his own preferred environmental solution on thousands of employees who were probably doing much better than he was, on that front, all along. (McKelvey is building a multimillion-dollar mountaintop house in Utah.)
Come on. Without arrogant performative paternalism or maternalism, there’s no left.
Next up, firing any employees who smoke or vote Republican. Or drive cars to work. It’s for the planet. Also employees (but not Miguel) will be expected to bike to conferences around the country. For the planet.
Once upon a time the left would have seen the head of a corporation denying his employees meat as cruel, but now it’s just progressive. North Korea is just a millennial startup away.
