The media’s coverage of the Middle East these days is mostly Qatari/Turkish/Iranian propaganda.
That’s not just true of the Khashoggi story, in which the media literally repeats every claim handfed to it by the Turkish Islamist regime that imprisons and beats journalists, but on everything.
Especially Yemen.
The media’s reports on the civil war in Yemen between Iran’s Houthi Jihadis, some of the Sunni locals, some backed by the Saudis and the UAE, and others backed by Qatar, is non-stop propaganda about human rights violations committed by the Saudis.
These stories rarely bother to mention the Iranian or Qatari sides in this war. Or the kinds of Jihadis that they’re covering for.
Now BuzzFeed has deployed a smear piece against American veterans working privately in this war.
Cradling an AK-47 and sucking a lollipop, the former American Green Beret bumped along in the back of an armored SUV as it wound through the darkened streets of Aden. Two other commandos on the mission were former Navy SEALs. As elite US special operations fighters, they had years of specialized training by the US military to protect America. But now they were working for a different master: a private US company that had been hired by the United Arab Emirates, a tiny desert monarchy on the Persian Gulf.
On that night, December 29, 2015, their job was to carry out an assassination.
Their armed attack, described to BuzzFeed News by two of its participants and corroborated by drone surveillance footage, was the first operation in a startling for-profit venture. For months in war-torn Yemen, some of America’s most highly trained soldiers worked on a mercenary mission of murky legality to kill prominent clerics and Islamist political figures.
Their target that night: Anssaf Ali Mayo, the local leader of the Islamist political party Al-Islah. The UAE considers Al-Islah to be the Yemeni branch of the worldwide Muslim Brotherhood, which the UAE calls a terrorist organization. Many experts insist that Al-Islah, one of whose members won the Nobel Peace Prize, is no terror group. They say it’s a legitimate political party that threatens the UAE not through violence but by speaking out against its ambitions in Yemen.
Uh-huh.
Al-Islah isn’t just the Muslim Brotherhood. It’s also allied with Al Qaeda.
Al-Qaeda’s links to the Yemeni branch in the Muslim Brotherhood go far back, particularly through a jihadist cleric named Abdul-Majeed al-Zindani. He is a co-founder of the Brotherhood’s party in the country which is called Islah.
Zindani is also very close to Hamas, the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.
As Ryan Mauro at Clarion notes,
A 1993 State Department report said he was part of a circle of leaders with a “close working relationship” that included the “Blind Sheikh” who inspired the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; Hasan al-Turabi, a Muslim Brotherhood cleric in Sudan who has been called the ““Pope of Terrorism;” Afghanistan-based jihadist Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and Sheikh Gilani, leader of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, now known as Muslims of America.
In 2004, the U.S. Treasury Department named Zindani as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” because of his involvement with Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda. The department said he was linked to Ansar al-Islam, a Kurdish terrorist group in Iraq loyal to Al-Qaeda, and leads a radical university in Yemen known for producing terrorists.
A U.S. federal court said Zindani coordinated the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000 and a lawsuit accuses him of having personally chosen the two suicide bombers for the attack.
Senior Al-Qaeda operative Anwar al-Awlaki found shelter with the Brotherhood in Yemen. He hid in three homes owned by Islah members before he was killed by an American drone. One home belonged to Amin al-Okaimi, the chairman of Islah. The second safehouse was owned by al-Awlaki’s driver, whose brother is a high-level Islah official. The third house belonged to Zindani.
In other words, there’s amply documented proof that Al-Islah is a terrorist group and that Americans should be happy to see its leaders dead. But the media keeps promoting Jihadists and smearing the Americans brave enough to take them out.
