A foreign leader can get up and announce that he will interfere in elections on behalf of the Democrats and only a few conservative outlets will even cover it.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday threatened to launch an “information campaign” in the U.S. against Republicans, telling Mexicans and Hispanics not to vote for them unless U.S. lawmakers change their treatment of Mexico
“Starting today we are going to start an information campaign for Mexicans who live and work in the United States and for all Hispanics to inform them of what we are doing in Mexico and how this initiative by the Republicans, in addition to being irresponsible, is an offense against the people of Mexico, a lack of respect for our independence, our sovereignty,” he said.
“And if they do not change their attitude and think that they are going to use Mexico for their propaganda, electoral, and political purposes, we are going to call for them not to vote for that party, because it is interventionist, inhumane, hypocritical, and corrupt,” Lopez Obrador said, later adding that Mexico would be insisting that “not one vote” goes to Republicans from Mexicans and Hispanics.
Mexico encouraging its citizens to vote in U.S. elections has never been subtle. Mexicans in the U.S. are organized to vote in both Mexican and American elections. As are Mexicans with U.S. citizenship living in Mexico. (A more sizable population than many people realize.) The number of Mexicans with U.S. citizenship makes such campaigns far more effective than election interference by any other country.
A group of Mexican senators is backing a “Tell Them To Vote” campaign that encourages Mexicans to urge relatives living in the U.S. to vote in the November election.
Sen. Gabriela Cuevas says she will push for the full Senate to back the campaign, which includes videos that call on Mexican-Americans in the U.S. to register to vote. Speaking Tuesday, Cuevas said that “I think this is something that can unify all the political parties.”
An estimated 12 million people of Mexican descent live in the United States.
While Cuevas didn’t mention Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump by name, she said the campaign is important to discourage any “campaign of hate against Mexicans.”
Obrador has become more aggressive about actually threatening to help Democrats.
Mexico’s president on Friday attacked the governor of Texas’ latest steps to crack down on unauthorized migration, saying he would urge voters of Mexican origin in the United States not to vote for “anti-immigrant” candidates.
On Thursday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he had authorized the National Guard and state authorities to “apprehend” migrants and transport them to ports of entry on the border with Mexico.
“If there’s a candidate from a party that mistreats immigrants and Mexicans, we’re going to ask our countrymen there that they don’t vote for that candidate or party,” Lopez Obrador told reporters at a regular morning news conference.
Mexico is stepping up its election interference further. Democrats have yet to condemn or disavow the foreign election interference that benefits them. Let alone to agree to do something about it.
I’ve seen propaganda posters in Spanish in the Mexican grocery stores for a long time. I don’t know how effective they are. But they are good at scaring people about La Migra. Or maybe it is word of mouth or whatever that scares them so much.
