Chairman Milley has some thoughts about Sputnik moments.

General Mark Milley, the nation’s top military officer, called China’s suspected test of a hypersonic weapons system “very concerning” and almost like a “Sputnik moment,” amid increasing tension between the U.S. and China… 

“What we saw was a very significant event of a test of a hypersonic weapon system. And it is very concerning,” Milley said this week. “I don’t know if it’s quite a Sputnik moment, but I think it’s very close to that. It has all of our attention.” 

All of our attention? Last time I checked, all of Milley’s attention was on diversity, equity and inclusion.

The military’s diversity and inclusion efforts are not just for “diversity’s sake,” but are critical to the readiness and capability of the joint force, the military’s top general said. 

“It’s diversity to improve the system, improve the military, improve our problem-solving capabilities and improve our warfighting readiness in order to protect and defend the Constitution,” Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley said Sept. 24 during a virtual town hall.

China may be beating us militarily, but we’ll have the most diverse force ever.

By the fall, Milley was talking about fighting “unconscious” bias in the military

The only unconscious bias here is in favor of virtue-signaling over winning wars. China wants to win wars, our brass wants to virtue signal. 

That’s how you get Sputnik moments.
