The NBA, ESPN, LeBron James and assorted sports stars made it very clear that profits come before principles in China. But, many of the players, were never acting out of principle.
Sports franchises were playing to a leftist media by endorsing Black Lives Matter. And black players were, in many cases, adopting black nationalist points of view, rather than universal human rights principles.
And there aren’t a whole lot of black people protesting in Hong Kong.
That’s the ugly, dirty truth.
There were never any universal principles in the mix here. Just some domestic virtue signaling and racial nationalism.
China’s human rights abuses have often been used to argue about the double standards of lefty corporations and academics. But with their reactions to the Hong Kong protests, the double standard was indisputably proven.
