The 64,000 Ruble question is whether this level of radical wokeness is going to, at some point, turn off the suburban Democrat reader base for publications like the New York Times.
Praising Communism didn’t do it. Purging James Bennett for occasionally featuring provocative non-lefties to make the New York Times editorial page feel like something less than a long diatribe by an army of Michelle Goldberg and Charles Blow clones probably won’t.
What about trying to rehabilitate the female version of Charles Manson and Mark David Chapman?
The Times is on it with an insane piece by Bonnie Wertheim about a very insane woman.
Overlooked No More: Valerie Solanas, Radical Feminist Who Shot Andy Warhol – She made daring arguments in “SCUM Manifesto,” her case for a world without men. But her legacy as a writer and thinker was overshadowed by one violent act.
Bonnie might want to check Valerie’s position on men in dresses. While shooting Andy Warhol and gendercide are awesome, she might turn out to not have been okay with the transgender identity politics crusade.
Anyway, this is the sort of thing the New York Times is now rehabbing…
Solanas was a radical feminist (though she would say she loathed most feminists), a pioneering queer theorist and the author of “SCUM Manifesto,” in which she argues for the wholesale extermination of men.
Sure. Why not.
We’ve gotten around to endorsing calls by black nationalists to kill off all white people. Once all the men are also killed off, and then the straight women, and then the lesbians, that will make for the perfect utopia of “trans people of color” that the contemporary Left seems obsessed with.
Its opening line is at once absurd and a call to arms for the coalition she was forming, the Society for Cutting Up Men:
I’m not sure that promoting this is worse than the time that the New York Times was promoting Communism.
Valerie killed fewer people.
She sold copies in leftist bookstores and on the streets of Greenwich Village for $1 ($2 if the buyer was a man).
The original affirmative action.
Today, the text is read in some women’s and gender studies courses.
Of course it is.
Her attack on Warhol fractured mainstream feminist groups, including the National Organization for Women, whose members were split on whether to defend or condemn her. Those who defended her, including the writer Ti-Grace Atkinson and the lawyer Flo Kennedy, formed the bedrock of radical feminism and presented Solanas as a symbol of female rage.
Bonnie Wertheim never actually makes the case for Solanas’ legacy as a writer or a thinker. The Scum Manifesto reads like the ravings of an overeducated crazy person which is exactly what it is, and climaxes with a call for gender terrorism.
Here are some deep thoughts from the overlooked feminist thinker.
Prior to the institution of automation, to the replacement of males by machines, the male should be of use to the female, wait on her, cater to her slightest whim, obey her every command, be totally subservient to her, exist in perfect obedience to her will, as opposed to the completely warped, degenerate situation we have now of men, not only not only not existing at all, cluttering up the world with their ignominious presence, but being pandered to and groveled before by the mass of females, millions of women piously worshiping the Golden Calf, the dog leading the master on a leash, when in fact the male, short of being a drag queen, is least miserable when his dogginess is recognized — no unrealistic emotional demands are made of him and the completely together female is calling the shots. Rational men want to be squashed, stepped on, crushed and crunched, treated as the curs, the filth that they are, have their repulsiveness confirmed.
Uh-oh. That drag queen line suggests Solanas may need to be purged as a TERF.
