I’m being a little unfair here.
The Worst Mayor of New York City is still a competitive field and David Dinkins, Bill de Blasio’s racist and incompetent mentor, is still a contender. And I suspect Eric Adams, despite sending the right messages on crime, will score his own points.
But at least Bill de Blasio probably can’t be the worst governor in New York State history. Cuomo has that one pretty tightly locked up.
So this makes sense.
Bill de Blasio, a career politician and operative, was facing the prospect of life outside public office for the first time in two decades.
Then came the downfall of his archnemesis, Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Now the New York City mayor, who will leave office in four months due to term limits, has begun calling allies about a prospective run for governor in the wide-open Democratic primary next June.
This may go almost as well as his presidential run.
The obvious problem with a Bill de Blasio run for anything is that everyone hates him. How does a politician with no base run for office?
Bill de Blasio is a leftist, but the Left hates him because he didn’t entirely turn New York City into a crime hellscape in which everyone was already stabbed to death. Count on Alvin Bragg to make more progress in that department. And everyone else hates him because he is a leftist. Also he’s lazy, incompetent, and completely tone-deaf. Not to mention his wife and all those missing millions.
The only way Bill de Blasio becomes governor is if every single other candidate is eaten by bears.
Alternatively, he could move to Norway and run for something. No one there knows who he is.
