There was a time, I’m not sure, when a Newsweek cover touting Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Israel bashing and anti-Semitism would have been a meaningful statement of editorial intent. I’m sure it still is. But Newsweek is a beyond failing publication that has spent years putting out desperate trolling covers meant to attract attention from someone. Anyone. Newsweek wasn’t quite as desperate about it as the New York Daily News, whose every cover became a desperate troll, but it was up there. And the legal issues haven’t helped.
To recap, Newsweek was sold for a buck, wasn’t even worth a buck, tried going digital, had its offices raided, began putting its headlines in ALL-CAPS, and just called Time Magazine and threatened to commit suicide if it didn’t get a blurb.
Newsweek’s endorsement of anti-Semitism and Rep. Omar might be more impressive if it weren’t coming from a magazine whose offices were raided by law-enforcement and which was sold for less than the price of a cup of coffee.
Here’s a typical Newsweek headline from January, “ROBERT MUELLER WILL INDICT A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE NEXT 60 DAYS: ‘THEY WILL BE QUITE FAMILIAR TO THE AVERAGE AMERICAN,’ SAYS FORMER CIA DIRECTOR”.
Also, from last year, “DONALD TRUMP IS A ‘RUSSIAN ASSET’ OWNED BY THE MAFIA”.
And the best one yet, “ELDERLY AMERICANS ARE DYING WITHOUT GETTING TO READ MUELLER’S REPORT – AND THEY’RE NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT”.
…and they’re not happy about dying is the best part.
Newsweek is a contemptible joke. its descent into endorsing anti-Semitism should be viewed within the context of its general descent. It’s the media equivalent of an alley bum willing to do anything for a nickel. Except alley bums have more standards than Newsweek..
