The “Trump just refounded ISIS” meme is boomeranging around the media echo chamber.
A few problems with it…
1. ISIS is still “founded”. It’s just more of a multinational terror network these days than a caliphate. It’s more like Al Qaeda and its physical footprint matters less. And that physical footprint is extremely unlikely to have the power and influence that it once did.
2. The ultimate origins of ISIS lie in Iraq, not Syria. Obama’s decision to let Iran take the wheel in Baghdad helped make it happen. The future of ISIS is not going to be determined in Syria. Its real basis has always been among Iraq’s Sunnis.
3. ISIS is not ultimately going anywhere because it derives from the Sunni population and its brand has been adopted by a variety of Islamic terror groups around the world. The meme is an attempt to falsely blame Trump for future ISIS terror attacks and violence.
