Hollywood’s top-ranked award show will dominate media coverage for the day and will be forgotten well before the week is over. The big FYC billboards will be rolled up and recycled. And the little golden statues will eventually end up on eBay.
The Academy Awards started out as a private industry party and has become that again. And the Oscars are less relevant than ever because Hollywood is less relevant than ever.
Industry figures used the awards to celebrate Oppenheimer and Barbie, but the summer’s phenomenon is already dead by the time the awards arrive. Of the two, only Barbie was ever really relevant. It is where the industry is, in ripping apart any recognizable IP and turning it into a movie, a series, and more money.
Hollywood isn’t art, it’s Disney+ and Netflix. It’s an insane amount of money being spent by insanely wealthy dot coms and the Hollywood studios trying to keep up with them on IP-based content. Madame Web, for all the jokes, is more relevant than Oppenheimer is.
But how culturally relevant are the big franchises? That’s debatable too.
The whole point of the franchise is that the individual items are disposable. Disney became expert at turning every third and fourth-tier comic book character into a movie or series. But the only reason any of that works is that it’s disposable. And it’s become so disposable that the machine is starting to break down.
The problem is the familiar one on the internet.
Social media rewards a constant stream of content. The faster the content is churned out, the more clicks it can potentially get. But a machine churning out content becomes disposable gruel that no one notices anymore.
Just because the gruel costs $250 million and has the Star Wars or Marvel label on it doesn’t change that.
In ‘Why Old TV Shows Are Beating Hollywood’s Billion Dollar DEI Machine’, I wrote that “in 2023, more people were watching “NCIS” reruns than the top two streaming programs combined. And more are watching old episodes of “Friends” than either “Ted Lasso” or Star Wars’ “The Mandalorian” despite an estimated $120 million per season budget.”
“After an unfathomable $238 billion in Peak TV spending that year, most viewers were comfortable dialing up old episodes of “NCIS”, “Criminal Minds”, “Gilmore Girls”, “Seinfeld”, “Supernatural”, “The Simpsons”, and “Heartland”: a show about a horse ranch set in Canada.”
Does this suggest that Hollywood is culturally relevant today? The billion-dollar gruel isn’t sticking and the whole point of the Oscars is the pretense that what is being celebrated is timeless and will be around for a long time.
Do you remember what the Best Picture of 2021 was? What about 2020? Do the names ‘Spotlight’, ‘Moonlight’ or ‘CODA’ ring any bells?
Forget about it. Everyone else has.

Jeff Bargholz says
Marlon Brando was a leftist and a bit out there, but he was cool and a good actor and a good looking guy. He was from Omaha but nobody is perfect.
Algorithmic Analyst says
It’s funny. I never watched them, but I remember back in the 1980s that the Oscars were so popular that people in the SF Bay Area used to have parties where they all got together to watch the Oscars on TV.
ron says
When I was a kid back in the 50’s we saw most of the movies, and rooted for our favorites to win. We all watched and of course the movies were good and not sexual filth.
Jeff Bargholz says
I think my mother still watches that shit. I guess somebody has to.
I haven’t watched The Oscars since I was a kid. I think John Wayne was still alive back then and Clint Eastwood was young.
Last I knew, 75% of Oscar nominees have to be black or some stupid racist shit like that. If I want to see “Bridgerton,” I’ll just watch TV commercials or go to a City Council meeting.
Nealonder says
I was invited to an Oscar party last Sunday. I ignored it. Apparently, everyone else did too. The host sent out a note saying the party had been canceled. Not one person had RSVPd. Out of 30.
Alex says
Nope..Have not watched the Oscars in over 50 years….
A) What they call entertainment… is garbage…..poor acting, even worst storylines.
B) Nothing more than degenerate behavior on display. So, I pass every year.
C) Who needs to watch people of no intelligence fawning over themselves.
Have no plans to watch it ever.
Kynarion Hellenis says
As for B), I have begun to make a game of noticing how many times I must endure watching and hearing men and women urinate (fast forward!). What does this add to the story? It is nothing more than prurience and inordinate interest in scatological functions.
Jeff Bargholz says
You know, just two or three days ago I would’ve scoffed at your urination comment but I’ve seen two movies since then (I watch WAY too much Netflix and streaming web stuff) that opened with urination scenes. One was a chick! And another one was a guy so tiny he should be ashamed to have exposed himself on film. I’d keep it in my pants if I were that small and I would probably keep it under wraps regardless. You never know who’s going to see a movie. Luckily I can’t remember either movie but I remember thinking the pee scenes were unnecessary.
I had a girl I was with yank her tights down and pee right on a light rail platform a couple days ago. I practically begged her to go behind a big fuse box in the dark but when some people have to go, they have to go, I guess. It seemed unladylike to me.
I made her take a shower as soon as she got to my place but I was going to make her do that anyway. I’m such a pig-dog.
CowboyUp says
Nobody even bothers to remember the ‘winners,’ anymore. They aren’t celebrating art, they’re celebrating politics.. The only news I got from it was that John Cena jumped the shark.

Great write up, Amen!

The entertainment industry, Hollywood, and Madison Ave. are mostly comprised of evil depraved psychopathic criminal scum who prey on children, impressionable young people, and those naive people who lack the capacity to understand the garbage and evil being created perpetrated and distributed and pushed throughout the country through movies, TV, and commercials and the general social media..
Hollywood is an evil woke leftist democrat brainwashing manufacturing operation.
The entertainment industry are the equivalent of drug pushers.
They foster and promote and celebrate outrageous immoral and unethical and criminal behaviors and causes..
The US entertainment industry has lost its mind.
Hollywood and Madison Ave ….. actors, actresses, writers, screenwriters, directors, producers, studios, etc.etc.etc.,
are depraved psychopathic pervert leftist woke DEI CRT BLM racist scum.
The movies and TV programs and commercials manufactured by Hollywood and Madison Ave are bad,
really bad filthy scatological sexually perverted racist garbage.
They manufacture intellectual and emotional and physical poison for children and the impressionable
young particularly.
And they get rich doing this crap.
Hopefully, they will all go broke … one way or another
Good and decent people will eventually have to clean it up.
Meanwhile, take care of yourself, family and friends and kindred spirits.
The devil take the hindmost.
Nealonder says
A lot of people agree with you. Some are taking a crack at disrupting Hollywood and the whole corrupt studio system and method of producing films (by woke committees trying to push an agenda instead of producing art. Pay heed to what Angel Studios is doing. They are still pretty small, but they have a bank account, a novel way of producing films, and they have the right mindset for “not cleaning up Hollywood” but disrupting it by doing things opposite of how Hollywood would do it.
SPURWING PLOVER says
In case many have missed that just about all the movies that win Best Picture Oscar are never seen again and you cant find hem at Walmart or any of the video stores mostly because they all Bombed
Domenic Pepe says
The Chinese Communists are not the only ones waging psychological warfare on American children, youth, and citizens.
Hollywood movies and TV and Madison Ave are also waging propaganda wars on America and American citizens and youth.
In fact, they are more insidious and deadly in destroying American culture, tradition, religion, and freedom of thought as well as rational thinking and common sense.
Hollywood and Madison Ave are the Sodom and Gomorrah of today. Only worse.
The Hollywood and Madison Ave cesspools and their moral degenerates put out more mental garbage, trash, pollution, and psychopathology than anything else.
Most Hollywood movies and Madison Avenue and TV commercials are deadly poison to the minds of people and particularly children and the young.
Actors, actresses, writers, screenwriters, producers, directors in Hollywood and Madison Ave create the degenerate perverted garbage that infests and infects American culture, and brainwashes the young.
And depraved sicko Hollywood (and US politicians) even love the filthy depraved sadist pervert scatological psychopath comedian ZZZZelenskiii who plays the piano with his schlunck on Ukrainian TV.
Tex the Mockingbird says
So far no movies about Greta Thunberg the false God or Climate Change or make that Goddess since Gore is their God of Climate Change
RS says
The infatuation with Hollywood dissolved a long time ago. They are elites who hold no standards of morality, rationality, or standards of honesty, they can afford to be totally self centered and not have concerns for the rest of the people in the world who work hard for a living and raise their family with values. They win their statues on judgment made by other elites and the emptiness of the whole organization is not inspiring.
