I know that “They want you to wear masks forever” is a popular conservative meme. It’s not untrue of the likes of Fauci, members of the medical bureaucracy who would love nothing more than continue to control the lives of millions of people forever. Or teachers’ union bosses like Randi Weingarten, who would like the power to close schools anytime she chooses using pseudo-medical alarmism.
A lot of the media would also love to keep the public chained to its latest alarmist stories. And after President Trump, it needs a hook. Any hook.
But the Democrat establishment would like to reopen enough of the economy to properly loot it and create a winning narrative for 2022 and 2024.
Just like Governor Newsom going from a ban on outdoor dining to quickly dismantling the bans to meet the public health emergency of his recall, Biden’s people, the Democrat establishment, and much of the Left wants to reopen things and move on to the next crisis.
As Alinsky said, “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.”
The drag has dragged. And, much like Khrushchev condemning Stalin, we’re getting a wave of reports discrediting pandemic safetyism.
A few weeks ago we got the CDC study on contaminated surface transmission which pegged it at a” less than a 1 in 10,000 chance of causing an infection.”
Masks are being slowly taken apart in assorted studies. And now we get the social distancing takedown.
The risk of being exposed to Covid-19 indoors is as great at 60 feet as it is at 6 feet — even when wearing a mask, according to a new study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers who challenge social distancing guidelines adopted across the world.
Opening windows or installing new fans to keep the air moving could also be just as effective or more effective than spending large amounts of money on a new filtration system, he said.
“What our analysis continues to show is that many spaces that have been shut down in fact don’t need to be. Often times the space is large enough, the ventilation is good enough, the amount of time people spend together is such that those spaces can be safely operated even at full capacity and the scientific support for reduced capacity in those spaces is really not very good,” Bazant said. “I think if you run the numbers, even right now for many types of spaces
This is common sense stuff. And common sense, which was temporarily banned during the pandemic, is now being allowed. (Though not when it comes to anything involving global warming. That science has to be restricted to lunatic doom-mongering so Big Green can get richer.)
Over isn’t really over though.
A major point of this exercise was to field-test a medical emergency shutdown of the economy, the First Amendment, and public life. Keeping it going indefinitely is not the plan except among the experts who would love to maintain their power and importance. But being able to turn the emergency on or off at will, that’s a strategic use of power.
Meanwhile, the machine that turned all of this on will slowly reveal its hollowness. But that won’t stop a reboot when the time is right.
We’ll learn some things, but perhaps not others, like how many patients died in hospitals because they were heavily sedated and intubated to avoid endangering the medical staff. The sheer number of people who died because the experts made certain decisions, like sending infected patients to nursing homes to clear out hospitals, is likely to be even more nightmarish than we realize. And that issue will unfortunately remain fringe.
Meanwhile, the experts will slowly let people know that everything they were paranoid about was an invented fear. But when the time is right, they’ll push the button again.
It’s a brave new world. We’re just living in it.
