18 FDNY fire companies are reportedly out of service and around 2,000 firefighters are out on medical leave in what’s being described as a sick-out. Since the FDNY has under 11,000 firefighters, that’s about 20% of the force out leaving New York City quite unsafe.
40 FDNY ambulances are also reportedly out of service however union members claim that it may as high as 150 ‘buses’.
Either way there is a serious health risk to New Yorkers here.
But when some firefighters tried to talk about a Dem politician about it, they were suspended.
Six New York firefighters were suspended for four weeks without pay Friday following an incident between on-duty firefighters and an elected official’s staff, according to a statement from a New York City Fire Department (NYFD) spokesperson.
The incident is that they complained to a politician.
The firefighters drove a fire engine to New York state Senator Zellnor Myrie’s office in Brooklyn in protest of the city’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate, a spokesperson for the senator’s office told CNN Sunday.
Myrie’s spokesperson Matt Baer said the firefighters went to the senator’s office, rang the doorbell and asked to discuss the vaccine mandate with the Brooklyn-based senator in what Baer described as a “cordial” interaction. The firefighters asked Baer, who was in the office at the time, where the senator lives and then said the city would have blood on its hands come Monday because of the vaccine mandate. Baer told CNN that Myrie has not been directly involved with the city-wide vaccine mandate. “We love the firefighters, we have no problem with them at all,” he said. “But this was inappropriate.”
While doing this on duty is inappropriate, somehow I doubt they would have been suspended if they’d gone to a BLM rally/riot. Fire trucks are routinely taken to participate in parades and even birthday parties. This is a punitive response to political speech which was warning about a real crisis.
Now the crisis is here.
