Tucker Carlson made some explosive assertions recently, suggesting that the CIA and the FBI brought down Richard Nixon because he was on to their efforts to undermine the American system as the Founding Fathers had intended it to run and knew that the CIA was involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Carlson’s segment quickly became wildly controversial, but is it true? We may never know for sure — and that in itself demonstrates yet again the need to demand and enforce complete transparency and accountability from these agencies that all too easily can go rogue.
Carlson said: “Richard Nixon was re-elected in 1972 by the largest margin of the popular vote ever recorded before or since. Nixon got 17 million more votes than his opponent. Less than two years later, he was gone. He was forced to resign and in his place, an obedient servant of the federal agencies called Gerald Ford took over the White House.” Carlson went on to explain that Nixon believed that “elements in the federal bureaucracy were working to undermine the American system of government and had been doing that for a long time. He often said that.” He suggested that CIA and FBI operatives orchestrated both the Watergate break-in and the two-year-long firestorm that brought Nixon down.
According to Carlson, “on June 23, 1972, Nixon met with the then–CIA director, Richard Helms, at the White House. During the conversation, which thankfully was tape-recorded, Nixon suggested he knew ‘who shot John,’ meaning President John F. Kennedy. Nixon further implied that the CIA was directly involved in Kennedy’s assassination, which we now know it was. Helms’s telling response? Total silence, but for Nixon, it didn’t matter because it was already over. Four days before, on June 19, the Washington Post had published the first of many stories about a break-in at the Watergate office building.” This doesn’t add up to the CIA deciding to take out Nixon, since the break-in and the Post story both happened before the president’s conversation with Helms, unless Nixon had enunciated this before the break-in.
And he had. Tucker Carlson actually got the date wrong. The Nixon/Helms conversation didn’t take place on June 23, 1972, but on Oct. 8, 1971 (it’s further mislabeled on this audio file as taking place on Oct. 10, 1971, but the Nixon tape logs set the meeting on the 8th). Nixon said to Helms: “Uh, Who shot John [JFK]? Uh, is Eisenhower to blame? Is Johnson to blame? Is Kennedy to blame? Is Nixon to blame? Etcetera etcetera etcetera. [This] may become, may become, not by me, but may become a very, very, uh, vigorous issue. If it does, uh, I need to know what is necessary to protect our inquiries, the intelligence gathering and the Dirty Tricks Department. And I will protect it. Hey listen, I’ve done more than my share of lying to protect it. I will do it and I believe it’s totally right to do it.”
This is not all that clear or straightforward a statement, but it does give the impression, since Nixon was talking to the head of the CIA, that the “Dirty Tricks Department” was involved in the killing of Kennedy and might need protection if the full truth about the assassination came out. President Kennedy’s nephew, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., affirmed in December, in response to an earlier Tucker Carlson broadcast, that “the CIA’s murder of my uncle was a successful coup d’état from which our democracy has never recovered.” Yet in the fifty years since Nixon’s conversation with Helms, the Kennedy assassination, while spawning a cottage industry of alternative explanations to the Warren Commission report, has never really become a “very, very vigorous issue,” at least to the extent that the CIA’s role, if any, has been revealed.
Could it ever be? If the CIA really was involved in killing Kennedy and forcing Nixon to resign (which would apparently require Helms to have brushed aside Nixon’s declarations that he would protect the “Dirty Tricks Department” and to have focused solely on Nixon’s revelation that he knew about that department at all) will the American people ever know that for sure?
On Dec. 22, 1963, exactly one month after the Kennedy assassination, former President Harry Truman wrote in the Washington Post that “for some time I have been disturbed by the way [the] CIA has been diverted from its original assignment. It has become an operational and at times a policy-making arm of the Government. This has led to trouble and may have compounded our difficulties in several explosive areas.” He added, “We have grown up as a nation, respected for our free institutions and for our ability to maintain a free and open society. There is something about the way the CIA has been functioning that is casting a shadow over our historic position and I feel that we need to correct it.”
Yet it has never been corrected. The CIA and FBI are almost completely unaccountable to anyone and, it is increasingly obvious, deeply corrupt and politicized. Does anyone have the courage, or the ability, to face down these rogue agencies?

I’d have to see more evidence. I do wish TC had admitted or denied that Oswald was the assassin for this reason: The CIA may have known of Oswald’s desire to kill JFK, and they may have failed in any number of ways to alert the FBI or Texas law enforcement authorities. They may have even set him up to kill JFK. I mean, maybe they used relatively passive means to reify their objective. After all, Oswald was in fact a whack job (of the malignant narcissist variety), and the CIA would have known that because of his “defection” to the Soviet Union. The KGB certainly knew he was. They were puzzled as to why he wanted to come to the USSR, but he raised such a ruckus in the Soviet Embassy in Stockholm, they relented.
The Prisoner says
There’s lots of evidence, you have chosen to not look, and you will not look. The idea that Oswald did it is not under serious consideration by any informed and honest person. You have written gossip and speculation, things you took from bad sources. There was no indication that Oswald wanted to kill JFK. Let’s just stop right there, I wasted enough energy already on your post.

What’s wrong with a Grand Jury Investigation into the CIA? the FBI, has “overtly” asked for an internal investigation…America deserves to “KNOW”, of any wrongdoing, & the prosecution of any Individuals trusted with national Security…That has “SURELY”, violated their oath! [ Pursue, to the END!]
Kevin N says
No, Beez, he was not a “whack job”, in all likelihood he was on the CIA payroll — they sent him to Russia! And they brought him home three years later — no real Cold War defector would be treated that way — and it’s one of the many reasons why his tax returns are classified top secret to this day … Yes, Oswald was involved in something up to his eyeballs, but I take him at his word when he declared, “I’m just a patsy!” following his arrest …
Mr. Spencer’s piece is excellent, but I’ll take exception to one point: he says the JFK assassination never became a ‘vigorous issue’, but in the 1970’s, following Watergate, it actually did, so much so that he government formed a House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) to reopen the case, in a lame attempt to reinforce the Warren Report and ease overwhelming public mistrust in it’s “Oswald acted alone” fiction … they failed miserably!

Time to take another look at Oliver Stone’s movie about the Kennedy assassination – seemed off the wall at the time, and totally way out from the “official narrative” at the time (lone Soviet-friendly gunman). Instead it was some weird web of underground characters in New Orleans.
What did Oliver Stone know and when did he know it when he constructed this alternate JFK assignation plot line.
Mo de Profit says
I watched this very recently and I am intrigued as to how close to the truth it is?
Jim Mayer says
After watching it I know that, of course, most of it is fiction, but the REALLY intriquing thing is to discover HOW MUCH of it is true? 75% 50? The point is, the movie doesn’t all have to be true to be a serious indictment of LBJ & the CIA.
Algorithmic Analyst says
Thanks Mo! I seem to remember that some parts of the Stone movie were factual, but overall I think the situation is uncertain. I don’t subscribe to any of the theories I’ve heard, or reject them necessarily either. Howard Hunt claimed to know the truth but I think he died without revealing it. Very strange happenings that strain credibility to call them coincidence.
I always thought that Oswald calling himself a patsy was revealing. That is entirely typical of such plots.

Thanks for your help, the movie was very convincing and seemed like the truth. Which, is fair praise for the movie.
NAHalkides says
I’m afraid you’re barking up the wrong tree here. Oliver Stone didn’t “know” anything, and his movie was almost pure fiction based on absurd Leftist delusions, among them that “Right-wing” means fascist. If there were any fascists involved, they were by proper definition men of the Left, like Oswald and, for that matter, Stone himself. The political Right believes in freedom and limited government, and while JFK wasn’t a great President, by today’s standards he would be a conservative Republican. There was no reason for the political Right to have wanted Kennedy dead.
NAHalkides says
My comments were too long to fit into one post, but I had more;
Oswald was not only a Leftist, he was an angry loner with no friends and it’s hard to believe he could have been part of a larger conspiracy. It’s possible, but I think barely, that he could have been used or encouraged by someone, but remember he had attempted an earlier assassination without anyone putting him up to it (and without success). Despite that failure, he was a very good marksman (he was trained in the Marines, remember) and could easily have fired three shots in the time recorded on the Zapruder film, whereas Stone tried to claim that Oswald couldn’t shoot straight.
As for Jack Ruby, he was considered crazy even back in the 40s when he lived here in Chicago. Nor could he keep a secret, so why would anyone want him on their team of conspirators? And if he had planned to shoot Oswald, why would he have stopped to send a moneygram via Western Union on his way to the police station? An Oswald-Ruby conspiracy simply makes no sense.
Jim Garrison, Stone’s hero, was in fact nothing of the kind, and there was never any real evidence against the men he accused.
No, Kennedy was murdered by a political Leftist, and if there were any co-conspirators they were also of the political Left. Of course the CIA has always leaned that way, and maybe they did have a hand in it, but either way we won’t get any useful information from Oliver Stone.

TooMush says
“Who shot John” is a slang phrase, more common in the past, meaning a confusion of accusations or a lot of nonsense. He’s clearly using it to describe the accusations behind thrown around, which is why he says, “Is Kennedy to blame?” Why would he refer to him as John in one instance and Kennedy in another?
You are simply taking a common idiom much too literally.
TooMush says
Also, if Richard Nixon were to refer to John F. Kennedy by his first name it would almost certainly have been as Jack, the name he used with his family and friends, not John.
Jim Mayer says
Well firstly, what’s on the tapes is on the tapes, regardless of what fam & friends called him. Did he say John or Jack, I ask bc I don’t know. But it’s totally believable that he called him “John” given that he prob wasn’t any casual friend of JFK so, in his mind he may have thought of him as “John Kennedy” but I’m just speculating.

L H Oswald was the patsy (never fired the first shot) just as LHO stated to Dallas PD before Jack Ruby was ordered to take him out. The CIA’s “Operation 40 Group” was involved in the Bay of Pigs fiasco, JFK ’63, and then Watergate. RM Nixon at the time of Watergate knew a National Cluster F–k would occur if the last 16 years (’58-’73) of CIA (and Mafia Contractors) involvement were exposed, ultimately revealing the coup d’ etat that occurred in ’63. RMN resigned – BTW, there were numerous reasons for all players to do JFK in ’63. The ultimate winner of course was LBJ as JFK was getting ready to dump him in ’64 as VP on the ticket. Too, MIL INDUST CMPLX and Big Oil also came out smelling like a rose as Vietnam was escalated and LBJ reinstated the oil depletion allowance (taxes dropped) that JFK had canned.

I think the Deep State and been running everything no matter how minutia since probably just before Vietnam all the way to present. Most likely they planted all these classified docs. How else does the archives suddenly know they’re there? Did you see the smug look on Pence’s face? He knew he had nothing to worry about, his career was already over. Biden should have never said he was running again. His usefulness has run out. They need someone younger who will sell out every principle he ever had. I would say Newsom and the voter fraud machine will get him it. If it got Biden in, it can get anybody in.
Ginger Li says
Something like that occurred to me as well – how convenient it has been to find all these so called ‘classified documents’ in all these disparate locations. Too convenient – too set up. If there’s something you wanted to charge the present Biden with, there’s a phone book of capital offenses. And what do they use? ‘Classified documents’ – most of which is hardly classified or worth knowing.
Daniel says
And if Trump runs, I’m sitting it out. He was congratulating himself on the deadly vaccines even today. I’m finished with him. His gala event for gay and tranny’s was over the top. Was watching Tucker Carlson when he outlined the CIA engineered Watergate to get rid of Nixon scenario, and every bit of it seemed plausible, especially since the ‘burglars’ were all connected in one way or another to the CIA.. It makes perfect sense – the CIA was in the business of overthrowing/destabilizing regimes and heads of state.

My dad, who was a renowned homicide detective, immediately called Watergate a set up. His reasoning was that giiven the pedigree of the ‘burglers’, had a $2.00/hr rent-a-cop came along, they would have hustled his ass outta there with a warning to keep his mouth shut. No way would G. Gordon Liddy simply put up his hands and give up. (Four of the five “burglars” were ex CIA)

The horrors and shock of him being shot. Than his brother. It was a horrible tragedy for the nation. I agree. I also remember the many murmurings from them that it was an inside job.
Baby Boomers grew up NOT liking the CIA, FBI and the government as a whole. Viewing them as corrupt and dangerous. Oh, and Monroe was killed to hush her up. By the same CIA.
Seems once the Left started locking down control of the Government and using these Agencies for their own benefit this has died down.
Now they adore the FBI, CIA. Cover for them. To think JFK was murdered by our own government is a conspiracy theory by crazy Trumpies. How fast the people of that generation forget, deflect. Willfully ignorant!

It appears that people forget that Nixon was the prosecutor against Alger Hiss, the Soviet spy. He then was appointed the first Secretary General of the UN. He was arrested and sent to jail.
Commies don’t forget and our government was and is full of them, just like Brennan. I believe this was a main reason. There are reasons why history is no longer taught in government schools.

The Left is still whining about his supporters having printed campaign fliers critical of Helen Gahagan(sp?) Douglas on pink paper. They hated Nixon. He was that generation’s Donald Trump. Nothing he could do was good. They couldn’t accept that the American people had made him their President. He was uncouth. Dr didn’t go to an Ivy League school. He was an anti-communist. And he didn’t make Mark “Deep Throat” Felt director of the FBI. So he had to go. Look, Washington D.C. was and remains a Democrat preserve. Its residents largely view ANY Republican administration as illegitimate. The CIA didn’t have to engineer Watergate. An entire establishment took anything wrong he did, amplified it, didn’t compare it to worse abuses committed by prior Dem administration (on which they’d been silent), and engineered his removal.

Read the book, “The Mysteries of Watergate: What Really Happened.” The break-ins were a CIA operation to spy on the Democrats. They got caught, and Nixon took the fall for it. The Washington Post knew the CIA was involved, and they covered up the real story. The book was written by the lawyer for DeepThroat.

THX1138 says
Why would the Deep State kill JFK? The Deep State in 1963 as now was overwhelmingly full of communist sympathizers from the Ivy League. JFK was himself ideologically orientated towards collectivism and the welfare state.
JFK was completely under the control of the Ivy League communist sympathizers in his cabinet. JFK gave Khrushchev everything he wanted. If anyone was a patsy for communism it was JFK. If anyone did help Oswald it was Fidel Castro, not the Deep State and not Khrushchev.
“We ended up getting exactly what we’d wanted all along,” snickered Nikita Khrushchev in his diaries, “security for Fidel Castro’s regime and American missiles removed from Turkey and Italy. Until today the U.S. has complied with her promise not to interfere with Castro and not to allow anyone else to interfere with Castro. After Kennedy’s death, his successor Lyndon Johnson assured us that he would keep the promise not to invade Cuba.”

You simply have no idea what you are talking about. If you think Oswald acted alone nothing erases the fact of Oswald’s communist sympathies. Since you say the Deep State was full of communists there is no difference between them.
Kennedy was more than likely killed because he sold out the Cuban trained anti-castro Bay of Pigs crowd. But even that is conjecture on my part. Oliver Stone had everyone killing Kennedy because he wouldn’t go deeper into Viet Nam.
We won’t know until the last papers are released. So stop telling is how stupid we are. you aren’t any smarter than the average blockhead.
