America has a problem. The Panama Canal has essentially become a Chinese property.
As I noted, “Panama joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative. It recently renewed a contract with Hutchison Ports, a Hong Kong based company, to manage the canal. The ports around the canal are also controlled by Chinese companies. China has built four bridges over the canal and controls much of the construction projects and the vital infrastructure in Panama. China for all intents and purposes controls the Panama Canal, the ports around it and the local infrastructure that makes international trade possible”
Secretary of State Rubio paid a visit to Panama and the government offered to not renew its links to the Belt and Road Initiative and ‘investigate’ some of the Chinese presence. While that’s better than the tough talk, it amounts to very little. The Belt and Road Initiative was particularly insulting to the United States and a clear violation of the treaty, but Hutchison remains the larger issue. And any failure to dislodge it is a crisis.
That’s why President Trump has been stepping up his rhetoric, but the question is whether there’s a deal to be made here or not. Legally, America is within its rights to reclaim the Panama Canal. I’m skeptical that that’s literally the plan. It’s likely going to come down to a deal that falls short of that and Trump is trying to make the best deal possible. And the best deal possible is for China to go home.
USA was talking about building the Panama Canal as far back as President Grant’s administration (1869-1877).
I believe there were prior attempts by some European nations.
The Frenchies tried to build the canal and failed, as you know. They did make a great tower in Paris and “statue” for Liberty Island, though. And their food is good.
They need to learn what deodorant is, though. You can smell them coming before you see them. They’re like the Germans they hate so much that way.
A down voted? I think I smell a frog.
That reminded me. When I was a kid they had these things on Paris streets called “Pissoirs”. I never went inside one, but the stench outside was awful.
LOL! They have some public bathrooms here in downtown San Jose that are made of green metal and are made to look like something from the late 19th century or early 20th century. I don’t think they’re fixed to the sidewalks or ground but they’re way to heavy to move without a small crane. The doors open and shut when you hit a button or whatever. once a person exits and the door closes, there are nozzles inside that spray the interior down. They’re really cool. The door locks automatically when it’s occupied and the occupant has to hit a button or switch or something to get out. I haven’t used one in years. There’s one a block from my apartment across the street from the light rail station.
I often wonder why the derelicts don’t use them as showers. I would if I were in their shoes. I think after a person gets out, he can jump back in as the door is shutting. He’d need a plastic bag to keep his clothes dry and be able to get undressed really fast but even if his clothes were to get wet, that’s better than being a dirty stinkmeyer.
I disagree. I think President Trump is going to take the canal back. The arrogant Chinese will never come to an equitable deal because those weaklings think they’re ten feet tall and bulletproof. The President has said he’s going to reclaim the canal so he has to or lose face. China isn’t going to go to war with America over the canal. Trump is going to sanitize the Chinese infestation, I’m sure of it. I predict Hutchison Ports will lurk around like rats in a corn field but it ain’t going to manage the canal much longer.
Panama has taken down signs in Chinese in an attempt to fool and placate President Trump but it won’t work. F Panama and F China. There’s nothing either country can do when Trump makes his move. We all know how he wields tariffs as weapons, and nobody is aware of that more than Xi Ping Pong except the fake socialist President of Colombia.
Yeah, I was thinking about the logistics of China fighting a war with us over the Panama Canal. Too far from home base for the Chinese.
Yes and the President of Panama kicked out the Chinese today. He knew Panama was going to lose the canal to President Trump if he didn’t. I figure the President will see how things go with Panama back in control and if there are no problems, he’ll let them keep control.
A down vote? I think I smell a frog.
Panama is not the problem.
And China would not be a problem, but for our Lefty traitors.
Lefties are the problem. Especially American ones.
Our Lefties have done everything they could do to harm American interests. (Okay, so I don’t count the Gay-child-sex slave trade or funding our own invasion as ‘our’ interests.)
What Carter should have done –
Build two new lanes sized for super-sized aircraft carriers, and made sure the Panamanians loved us.
Oh, and btw – anyone else remember how Obama’s IRS targeted Panamanians?
Tell China to take the long route around Cape Horn and lookout for the Rocks
