Trying to have your cake and eat it too is awkward and messy. But the Dems have their own cake problem.
The media and donor pressure on Pelosi to go for impeachment has been overwhelming. But red state Dems can be hurt by an actual impeachment vote. As Andy McCarthy notes in The Hill, they’ve been shielded from actually participating in such a vote.
The House has not voted as a body to authorize an impeachment inquiry. What we have are partisan theatrics, proceeding under the ipse dixit of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). It raises the profile, but not the legitimacy, of the same “impeachment inquiry” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) previously tried to abracadabra into being without a committee vote…
They are reflective, instead, of partisan House leadership that realizes it does not have impeachable offenses — so much so that Pelosi & Co. fear the wrath of voters if Democrats in districts friendly to President Trump are put to the test of voting to authorize a formal impeachment inquiry.
This way, the media gets to have its circus, the donors feel empowered and red state Dems don’t fear having to actually cast a vote.
But scams can only last for so long.
The media may care more about clicks, but the ActBlue hyperdonors want actual results. Sham hearings will leave them angry and betrayed.
And that will backfire quite badly.
Speaker Pelosi is gambling that Trump will lose. In which case the point becomes moot. If he doesn’t lose, then maybe enough noise will raise the numbers to the point where even red state Dems feel safer joining in. And if none of that happens, the whole thing will be trashed and then blamed on another Trump conspiracy.
