To the media, the Philly shootings of 6 police officers are an argument for passing more gun control laws. But Maurice Hill, the shooter, was only able to carry out the attack because his repeated violations of gun laws were not prosecuted.
“Our officers need help…. They need help with gun control. They need help with keeping weapons out of these people’s hands,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said. “This government, federal and state’s level, doesn’t want to do anything about getting these guns off the streets and getting them out of the hands of criminals.”
More accurately, Kenney’s people failed to keep the guns out of Maurice’s hands by keeping him off the street.
Court records show that charges against Hill for illegally possessing firearms and illegally carrying firearms were dropped in 2002 and 2003.
Similar charges had been dropped in 2001.
In 2007, again, charges for illegally carrying and possessing firearms were dropped.
Hill was not allowed to own guns. Every other time the cops caught him with weapons, the charges ended up being dropped.
So what we really need are more gun laws on top of the ones that aren’t being enforced against serial criminals like Maurice Hill. But don’t worry, they’ll be enforced against the potential victims of career criminals.
