Ocean’s 8 seemed like it might escape the dreaded curse of the failed Ghostbusters reboot and the faltering Disney Wars franchise. It didn’t show disdain for previous incarnations. And it was doing well enough that, unlike Ghostbusters and Solo, didn’t need to lean on identity politics to excuse its failures. But there are no shortage of Hollywood figures eager to play the victim card anyway.

“Ocean’s 8” star Mindy Kaling is making waves about white male movie critics — saying they’ve been “unfair” to the all-female-star reboot of the “Ocean’s” heist-movie franchise.

“If I had to base my career on what white men wanted, I would be very unsuccessful,” Kaling told Yahoo News. “There is obviously an audience out there who want to watch things like [‘Oceans 8’] which I work on.’’

I’m shocked that this is coming from one of the most talentless people in the industry whose career was based on Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and a sitcom with a white male protagonist and white male producers.

Co-star Cate Blanchett agreed, blaming the media for not getting it right. “The conversation has to change and the media has a huge responsibility,” Blanchett said.

Has a huge responsibility to give good reviews to bad movies?

That comes from the New York Post. Its bad review of Ocean’s 8 was written by a woman.

Plenty of the movie’s bad reviews come from female critics. Like Stephanie Zacharek of Time, Manohla Dargis of the New York Times, Katie Walsh of Tribune, and Jia Tolentino of the New Yorker.

The Rotten Tomatoes index shows a critic score of 68% and an audience score of 49%. The “white male critics” aren’t the problem. As usual, the paying customers are.

But But Emily Yoshida of New York Mag wins the identity politics bad movie sweepstakes. “I left Ocean’s 8 more convinced than ever that no amount of fierce, fantastic female ensembles can overcome the mediocrity of a dull male director.”

And if Ocean’s 8 had a female director, it would have been the fault of the best boy. Or some white male grip.

Because the unshakeable principle of the left is that identity politics groups can never fail, they can only be failed.
