Upon the passing of his beloved bulldog Otto, Dennis Prager reflects on the special bond between people and their dogs. What role should dogs play in our lives? And more importantly, what can we learn from this relationship?

Dogs are real angles.
People who learn how to listen to the messages they bring are blessed beyond many other blessings.

Angles? As in, the guys who hung out with Saxons and fought off Danes, until the Danes just moved in and said “pay us to leave you alone,” so they did.

Dear Mr. Prager: Has any highschool studemt, asked “If your dog were drowning and a stranger were drowning, whom would you pick to save?” pointied out that any dog can swim? A river that might drown a dog would have a dangerously swift current. Also, rescuing someone from drowning, if he’s not close to the shore where you can ectend an oar or a pole to him, or throw him a life preserber, if you can’t row out to him in a boat, can be very damgerous. If you’re not a trained lifeguard, and you try to rescue a pamicing, drowning swimmer, he can grab, and drown, you. So if my dog were drowning and a stranger were drowmimg, I would let my dog rescue himself and resvue the stramger, if I could do it without swimming out to him

I understand how hard it is to love and lose a dog.
I’ve had several dogs in my life, beginning when I was a child. I’ve loved each one and cried when they passed. The last one I lost was a 16 yr old doxie mix who was an adorable imp. His best friend is a sweet 13 yr old pitbull mix. I treasure each day I have with her.

As usual, Mr. Prager, a level-headed, empathetic message to all of us – dog owners or not! We have 2 wonderful dogs. One of them is 12 now and I already get teary-eyed at the thought that he will be leaving us within the next 3-4 years.

My idea of heaven is to be reunited with the cats and dogs I’ve loved
and lost over a long lifetime. I still miss them and love them so much.
Wonderful and wise video. Thank you.

I agree that dogs are a gift from the Lord God. I cannot prove why but this is what I believe.
Mankind is so finite, so limited, so ignorant that we really do not understand what the Lord God really means when He speaks about unconditional love. So, the Lord Hod gave us the dog to give us a tiny example of His unconditional love. Dogs love us without any conditions. And they are always there for us. And when a human and a dog develop a strong bond, it is just beautiful. I always marvel at the level of love my dog shows me everyday. She is a rescue mutt who wants to be near me all the time. As an older guy (67), my dog is my best friend. My kids are late 30s to early 40s with their own kids. So, a dog for me is a companion, a friend.
