When are Russian foreign influence operations a major crisis? When their existence can be exploited to achieve Democrat ends. But when the operations themselves are achieving Democrat political ends, it’s as quiet as a whisper.
It fell to the Financial Times and the former Danish PM who heads NATO to address the issue.
“I have met allies who can report that Russia, as part of their sophisticated information and disinformation operations, engaged actively with so-called non-governmental organisations – environmental organisations working against shale gas – to maintain European dependence on imported Russian gas,” the NATO Secretary General warned.
Finally an explanation for Greta Thunberg that makes sense. But this isn’t really new. The Democrats and their media just chose to ignore it.
It’s been well known for some time that the Russians are highly active in the environmental movement and that dates back to the Cold War. European environmentalists are a major priority, but Moscow has its tentacles in the US environmental movement as well.
But of course there’s no interest in that. Much as there’s no interest in the reports on “foreign election interference” that documented the fact that the Russians spent most of their resources targeting black nationalist groups.
Or the fact that what the Russians did do before the election largely seemed to help one campaign. That of Bernie Sanders, a guy with quite a Russian history.
These are not the Russians they want to see. And so they won’t talk about it.
A more adroit GOP would have turned this around on the Democrats. But that would require focus and strategy.
