Different cultures and people have different takes on what’s funny. Whether you think the Three Stooges or Kevin Hart are funny is pretty subjective. 

Going deeper, how do you actually define funny, what function does humor serve, and how does it shape our society have been battled over by everyone from evolutionary psychologists to neurologists to social scientists to actual comedians who do this for a living.

And then there are the congenitally unfunny breed of politically correct comedians, ala Colbert, who understand humor only as a tool for expressing contempt for the political opponents they hate, as a vehicle for achieving their goals.

“Why would I purposefully undermine something that seems to be a great idea, pretty much across the board? Like, I don’t need to make jokes just to make jokes. Like, I like to make targeted jokes,” Samantha Bee told Dan Rather about going easy on Biden.

I can’t deny that that has happened, I think that’s probably true across the board. You’re like, ‘Okay, well, we could be making jokes about — we could be making jokes about the infrastructure plan,’ but in general, I’m like, ‘Wow, this is great.’

This goes to the question of what humor is.

Bee’s answer is revealing. Jokes are “targeted”. They’re meant to achieve political goals. You don’t make jokes just to make jokes. That’s like writing for the sake of writing or singing for the sake of singing. And Communist regimes like the USSR or Cuba were pretty clear that no art form existed for any sake other than social progress and political conformity.

But beyond that, how does Bee define humor and comedy? As a form of aggression that is worthless in and of itself.

You don’t make jokes just to make jokes because jokes are worthless. Like contempt, which is what 99% of prog comedy consists of, humor is a negative element of the dark side to be used to attack infidels, to punch up, but never down. Jokes undermine, but don’t do anything positive. To joke about a thing is to hate it. And that’s not actually humor. It’s bile leaving the body through the tongue. 

Bee, like most woke comics, has no sense of humor. All she has is a sense of hate.
