In A View to Kill (or it may be a View to a Kill or something with those two words in it) the James Bond villain plots to destroy San Francisco. Little did he know that he could have waited a little bit and San Fran would have destroyed itself.
In California, shoplifting is legal, plastic straws are illegal. Traditional views of marriage are a hate crime but waving a knife in someone’s face is constitutionally protected free speech.
A disheveled man who appeared to have just been released from a hospital because he was wearing only blue hospital bottoms with no shirt and no shoes began ranting incoherently near Stearns and her friends. Then, the man pulled out a small knife, got in the women’s faces and repeatedly yelled, “Who wants to get cut?”
Stearns, 59, showed me her call log from that day. She phoned 911 at 11:41 a.m., 11:48 a.m. and 11:53 a.m. It wasn’t until 11:55 a.m. — 14 minutes after the first call — that police responded. According to Stearns, they took the man’s knife, but said his words hadn’t constituted a criminal threat and did not arrest him. The man talked about his freedom of speech and just walked away.
“Who wants to get cut” is, presumably, a philosophical inquiry or the words of a producer of a failing TV show.
Sure, the cops could have arrested him. He would have lunged at them with a knife. Cut two weeks of riots, diversity training, a shakeup in the police department, and a whole lot of lefties breathing down your neck.
It’s easier for cops not to do their jobs.
As I wrote some years back,
No more fascist cops hassling “innocent” people. Bill de Blasio won’t put up with any of that. De Blasio will put the cops in their place, inside a Dunkin Donuts and away from people. They’ll still get paid. They’re in a union. They just won’t lift a finger to help you because they’ll have more special monitors and civilian complaint review boards on their necks than they can handle.
And next time one of the innocent victims of Stop and Frisk is pounding your face into the sidewalk with one hand while digging through your pockets with the other, wave to the pair of beat cops sitting in the window of the coffee shop. And they’ll wave back without getting up. Because you voted for this. And you’re getting what you deserve.
Here’s your city on social justice and lefty pro-crime politics.
“I can’t outrun this guy,” she said. “This has become an inhospitable place for vulnerable populations like older women, like any older people.”
Just like any lefty city where the criminal element is empowered to prey on law abiding citizens.
It seems that just about every resident of the city has a story of walking in San Francisco and being yelled at, spit on, lunged at, punched or kicked by a stranger exhibiting deranged behavior.
Come to San Fran, where being violently assaulted while paying $4,000 a month in rent for a closet is part of the appeal.
Mayor London Breed said in an interview she hears these stories too — and they’re not OK.
“I understand that this is a problem,” she said. “What’s happening, unfortunately, is we see these people, we see that they’re in crisis, and we don’t have all the tools we need to address these issues until something happens.”
Of course we have the tools. They’re called cops, jails and guns. You’re choosing not to use them.
