Congressional Republican good intentions have foundered time and again on the shoals of government shutdowns. When Republicans control Congress and Democrats have the White House, they rush to meet White House demands to avoid being blamed for a government shutdown. And when Republicans control everything, Democrats still threaten a government shutdown, except Republicans to back down.
Some Congressional Democrats say they are open to shutting down the federal government in March over the Trump administration’s moves to dismantle government programs and agencies.
Federal government funding expires on March 14. To avoid a painful shutdown, Congress will need to pass legislation designating new spending level or extend current ones.
But when government funding expires in five weeks, Republicans will control the House only 217-215. That means Republicans will need total unanimity to pass a bill in the chamber.
And Republicans control the Senate 53-47 – which is not a wide enough margin to overcome the 60-vote threshold needed to bypass the filibuster, meaning Republicans will need Democrats to avoid a shutdown.
Kim is one of several Democrats to indicate a willingness to let the government shut down if Republicans can’t reassure them that their spending directives will actually be implemented.
Democrats are arguing that the onus would be on Republicans if a shutdown does happen, because they hold the majority in both chambers.
“They’re in charge, they have to work with us,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told Semafor.
Is that what being ‘in charge’ means? How did Schumer work with Republicans when he had the majority?
This game of chicken however may no longer be as effective as Democrats think. The start of Trump’s first term has signaled that the rules have changed. And that Republicans are willing to think out of the box.
The threat of a government shutdown is no longer as scary as it used to be and while Congressional Republicans, especially in the House, remain dysfunctional, the Trump administration is currently calling the shots. And a ;government shutdown’ may play into its hands.
Daniel is an optimist. But things have changed with the revelations so maybe some new outcomes are possible.
“But?” I think you mean “thankfully.”
Democrats still have a massive propaganda machine, but ABC, NBC, CBS, and all print media are losing the total ability to influence the public they had for decades. IF, Democrats shut down the government, there is now a free media that can counter the lies & deceit that Democrats spew.
Yes, almost nobody watches or reads the Minitrue Media. 3 to 4 million viewers a day in a country of 330 million legal residents and a possibly 50 million illegal ones? 20 million under the open invitation by No Border Biden’s handlers to invade America over the last four years and a minimum of 30 million who were already here before then. Sure, a huge amount of those thirty million have been pardoned for their crimes by the D-Bags and their RINO collaborators but another huge amount of them are still illegal aliens.
When the usual suspects like Maxine “James Brown” Waters, Fauxcahontas Warren, Chucky Chitauri, Jamie Asskin, Shifty Adam Quiff and “the Squat” try to perform for the Minitrue video cameras, they’re rebuffed by government agencies which President Trump is reforming, and ignored by the populace. They’ve been refused entry to the USAID building and Department of Education in only one week and that dismissive treatment will continue. Their screeches will continue to go unheard and President Trump will continue with his reforms.
Life in America is improving greatly at a rapid pace and it’s all due to President Trump and his cabinet. Did I already mention that Taylor Swift was booked at the Superbowl?
Yeah, that was cool. She looked shocked 🙂
Shocked dumb, or maybe she’s always been that way. She asked her rapper slut pal, “what’s that?” I’m surprised she didn’t add a “DUHHH?”
Her pal is a bit strange looking but sexy.
Taylor Swift was BOOED at the Superbowl, not “booked.” Damn’ I’d like to strangle all the semi literate ignoramuses responsible for the constant errors of spell-check programs. Irony is lost on those retards.
I have an idea: Let’s repeal the filibuster! The Democrats are going to do it when they get back in the majority, so why don’t we exercise some guts and do it to them before they do it to us for once? It can be a more consequential time than now to show that the Republicans can be just as ruthless as the Democrats, and it will probably get them more votes to boot!
What would work even better would be to un-elect more democrats. It’s going to happen in the next election and happen organically because democrats have been exposed for just how greedy and corrupt they are and the extent to which they are contemptuous of our Constitution, our laws and the American people.
And it’s happening without the help of the milquetoast republican party or the faux conservative media. Trump and the people around him are bold and brave and confident about what needs to be don. The same cannot be said about the majority of republican politicians on Crapitol Hill.
Maybe but the filibuster is useful in the right hands and destructive in the wrong ones, just like all tools.
“In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we’ve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else?” — Inaugural Address 1981, President Ronald Reagan.
Reagan was a cornball but he was an inspiring cornball who gave some very good speeches.
President Trump in his last term, said on air in the White house “Blame me then” to Schumer and Pelosi when they threated to shut the government down.
Yes, and it’s obvious that the majority of Americans don’t give a shit about a D-bag shutdown of the government this time around. It’s clear to most ordinary Americans that President Trump is improving the standard of living for ALL ordinary Americans and the D-Bags are doing all they can to impede him. It’s reformers Vs. obstructionists and we the people can see that. Take the President’s, and DOGE Captain, Elon Musk’s, ongoing eradication of government waste, corruption, aid to ihadi terrorists and persecution of Americans, all at taxpayer expense. The D-bags are screaming bloody murder and fighting it tooth and nail. USAID alone is responsible for an astounding amount of inefficiency, theft, graft, criminality and outright treason, and the American people are being woken up to these facts by Musk and his team of whiz kids.
Go ahead, D-Bags. Shut down toxic Congress. That’s what shutting down “the government” really means. Ordinary Americans could use a respite from your sabotage of our living standard and “woke” agendas.
Makes sense. The Dems are gonna protest shutting down govt agencies by shutting down even more govt agencies. It’s not the threat they think it is.
les and less people in the USA voting citizens category are buying and swallowing their bullshit
Cooperation with the Democrats Is a con game they are running. Can’t be trusted.
Yes, Chucky Chitauri has the same approach to everything and is incapable of innovation, unlike President Trump who adapts to every situation and beats his opposition every time like Alexander the Great. He learned valuable lessons during his first term and he isn’t repeating the few mistakes he made then. He’s acting on America’s behalf while the D-Bags oppose policies that the people can clearly see benefit them and the country as a whole. The people who the D-Bags hold in contempt while they pretend to be their champions. Even many stupid people are catching on to D-Bag lies and their obstruction of peace and prosperity, and there are plenty of stupid D-Bag voters. For instance, It’s only a matter of time before indoctrinated and dumb D-Bag voters find out they can’t afford eggs because of D-Bag operatives in the USDA, but they can drink out of plastic straws again because of President Trump.
Danny Boy is right, the D-Bags were authoritarian when Alzheimer Joe’s handlers were in charge and saboteurs now that Trump is President. That’s the way they always operate when power changes hands. Their refusal to compromise is a constant but we all know it isn’t working this time. President Trump is their superior in every way. He just flew across the Gulf of California to sign another bunch of nation building Executive Orders while simultaneously shooting down the stupid questions and accusations in the form of questions by D-Bag Minitrue Media trolls and reiterated that he’s going to abolish that parasitic, malignant and seditious enemy of the American people, USAID. He even pardoned that victim of illegal D-Bag political persecution,Ron Blogojevich, slammed Hamas jihadi terrorists and the anti-white genocide by the Bantu blacks in South Africa, defended necessary tariffs’ dropped the temporary tariff reprieves for Canada and Mexico early, reminded us that the EU is unable to retaliate without harming itself and its member countries, and so much more. He also commanded Hamas to release all its hostages by Saturday or “all Hell is going to break loose. Enough is enough.” He mentioned that the hostages recently released were horribly emaciated and traumatized and looked like Holocaust survivors. He even reiterated that he is ending the free ride for government workers who pretend to work from home, regardless of the illegal injunction by a criminal D-Bag judges.
Taylor Swift even got booed at the Superbowl, not “booked,” as that spell check program devised by semi literates mistranslated it to twice. Once in my original comment and again this one but I was ready for it this time. I hate computer programmers as a breed.
Damn! I meant “Gulf of America,” not “Gulf of California.” I’m still not used to the long overdue revision, I guess.
By the way, more of the American coast abuts the Gulf of America than Mexico’s does. I measured it.

Sums it perfectly, the next four years will be very interesting.
Trump is quickly restoring faith in those of us who had doubts.
What everyone should really be concerned about are the RINOs who for the sake of bipartisanship, will drop their shorts and bend over and let Chuckie and the dems have their way with them.
That’s been the M.O. of RINOs for decades. It would be unrealistic to expect them to not eventually cave to the dems. That’s the way of things on Crapitol Hill. The status quo; business as usual.
The more things change in Washington DC, the more they stay the same…..!
The Demo-Rats are in it for Themselves no one else matters its just for Them only
I’ve always though that shutting down the govt would make for an interesting experiment. Like Randy Newman once suggested, “Let’s drop the big one, see what happens.” I think we could survive awhile without our govt putting their grubby hands on everything.
Yes, we’ve not only survived but thrived every time the D-Bags have shut down Congress. “The Government. We’re better off when they aren’t busy sabotaging America.
Fight, fight, fight.
To quote the President.
