The media spends a lot of time talking about politically motivated firings. It spends a lot less time talking about politically motivated prosecutions. SDNY, the Southern District of New York, once dedicated to prosecuting terrorists, had become a clearinghouse for the garbage even Team Muller didn’t want to touch. To say that this stuff was politically motivated was an understatement.
It was as if SDNY was taking all its investigative cues from the New York Times and the Washington Post.
And, frankly, enough of this was enough.
The National Enquirer investigation was the sort of blatant politically motivated prosecution that would have lefties howling if it had been directed at a lefty media outlet. SDNY gave every appearance of being willing to chase every ambulance in the hope of either media coverage or career advancement under the Democrats. It needed a major housecleaning and now it will hopefully get one.
I would very much like to live in a world in which the federal government was not being used to investigative political opponents.
We, for the most part, used to live in that world, not so long ago in the oughts. Call me a flaming liberal, but I’d like to go back there. And if it takes overcompensating by firing everyone willing to chase political ambulances, so be it. I’m not optimistic that will work, but it’s a start.
