It’s no secret that Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, before she was plucked from obscurity by a corrupt ex-governor, had very different political views when running in her more conservative upstate New York district. But, by the standards of a radical primary in which it’s now routine to support eliminating planes, cows, medicine, the Electoral College and Israel, any politician from 3 years ago would seem staunchly conservative.
But Kirsten has to explain and reconcile her old positions. Particularly on the 2nd Amendment. And apologize for the Wrongthink of supporting civil rights.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that she “didn’t do the right thing” when she was a strong supporter of gun rights years ago.
Gillibrand has faced criticism from the left for supporting gun rights when she was originally a lawmaker in the House representing a district in upstate New York. She earned an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA) during her one term in the House, which she was elected to in 2006.
Upon entering the Senate in 2009, however, Gillibrand shifted her stance on gun control.
“Ten years ago when I became a U.S. senator, I recognized that I was only focused on the needs of my upstate district. But I really should’ve been focused on the needs of everyone,” she said Wednesday.
Representative government. Who needs it anyway?
But, translating from PolSpeak, Gillibrand supported the 2nd Amendment because her district did. When she represented New York, she switched her views to those of New York City.
Now she’s adjusting her views again.
Politicians representing their particular electorate is fine. But they should distinguish between their own views and those of the people they were elected to serve.
There’s nothing wrong with saying, “I support gun control, but I represent the views of my district”.
Sadly, few politicians are willing to be that honest. And so we get dishonest antics like those of Gillibrand and McCain.
