The old saw says that Jews earn like Episcopalians but vote like Puerto Ricans. And that when voting liberal, they look for an ethnically familiar face to make them feel comfortable.
That’s why Hillary pretended to have Jewish roots when she was running for Senate from New York (in reality, the only Jew she knew in childhood was the second husband of her non-Jewish maternal grandmother). That’s why John Kerry harped on the fact that his daddy was Jewish (although his family had converted to Roman Catholicism two generations before).
And that’s why every Democrat administration goes out of its way to show that it is chock full of liberal Jews. Rahm Emanuel’s presence in the White House was somehow supposed to compensate for the fact that the Obama Administration is rabidly anti-Israel (despite the protestations of Obama shill Jeffrey Goldberg). Madeleine Albright’s anti-Israel bias was supposed to be alleviated by her Jewish ancestry, although she didn’t give a damn about Judaism.
The active anti-Jewishness from the majority of American Jews allows President Obama to staff up with Jews who betray Jewishness at every turn. First there was Emanuel, who spent his time threatening groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), telling them that if they didn’t push Israel to make concessions, Obama would let Iran go nuclear.
This week, there’s Howard Gutman, Obama’s ambassador to Belgium, who said that there are two kinds of anti-Semitism: plain xenophobia, and Jew-caused anti-Semitism. There is no such thing as actual anti-Semitism, where people hate Jews for a reason the Jews did not cause. If Jews want to combat anti-Semitism, Gutman said, “The largest part of the solution remains in the hands of government leaders in Israel and the Palestinian territories and Arab countries in the Middle East. It is the area where every new settlement announced in Israel, every rocket shot over a border or suicide bomber on a bus, and every retaliatory military strike exacerbates the problem … Were a lasting peace in the Middle East to be reached, were joint and cooperative Israeli-Arab attentions turned to focus instead on such serious, common threats such as Iran, this second type of ethnic tension and bigotry here in Europe – which is clearly growing today – would clearly abate.” In other words, go ahead and hate the Jews – they deserve it. When Israel disappears, anti-Semitism will go, too.
The Administration’s position on Israel is clear, and it is antagonistic. Leon Panetta expressed it well last week, when he said that Israel had to “come to the table” and “mend fences” with murderous Muslim regimes like Turkey, Egypt, and the Palestinians.
A few years back, Norman Podhoretz wrote a book titled _Why Are Jews Liberals?_ He posited that most American Jews had substituted liberalism for their religion. He was right. But there’s more to it than that: most American Jews have actively sought to distance themselves from their religion, but simultaneously cling to their Jewishness as a badge of minority status. This means they’re proud Jewish anti-Jews. The Obama Administration has a rich pool of Court Jews that shields it from what should be the dire consequences of its anti-Israel fixation.
