Republican Governors Ron DeSantis of Florida, Greg Abbott of Texas, and Doug Ducey of Arizona are clearly getting under the skins of Democrat politicians and their mouthpieces. These hypocrites talk a good game about the “human rights” of illegal immigrants for whom they claim to have “compassion.” But they have been singing quite a different tune since Governor Abbott began busing just a few thousand illegal immigrants to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. This is a pittance compared to the more than two million illegal immigrants who have overrun southern border towns as a result of the Biden administration’s reckless catch-and-release-policy.
The Democrat mayors of these “sanctuary cities” were in an uproar when the illegal immigrants landed on their doorsteps. So were the residents of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, where former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle own a huge mansion, after about fifty illegal immigrants, mostly from Venezuela, landed there last week, courtesy of Governor DeSantis. Within two days the National Guard was called to whisk these unwanted visitors off the liberal wealthy enclave to a military base on the mainland at Cape Cod.
One of the destinations for the Washington, D.C.-bound buses dispatched by Governor Abbott was Vice President Kamala Harris’s residence at the US Naval Observatory. The vice president said nothing when asked to comment on the arrival in front of her Washington, D.C. home of illegal immigrants from the southern border, which she insists is “secure.” As Governor Abbott explained in providing a dose of reality about the uncontrolled border crisis that is causing Texas border communities such distress, “We’re sending migrants to her backyard to call on the Biden Administration to do its job & secure the border.”
If Harris genuinely wanted to uncover the “root causes” of the mass influx of illegal immigrants since President Joe Biden took office as she was tasked to do, all she had to do was to speak to some of these illegal immigrants. The primary root cause, she would have learned, is the pull factor of the open border that President Biden has created and the promise of a better way of life supported by American taxpayer-funded benefits. One of these immigrants said as much last week when he thanked President Biden during an interview for keeping the border open.
But Vice President Harris has no interest in learning first-hand from the illegal immigrants what motivated them to make the long, dangerous journey to the United States. Instead, the vice president has accused the Republican governors, who are trying to protect the residents of their own states from the flood of unvetted illegal immigrants released into their communities, of a “dereliction of duty.”
From the president on down, Biden administration officials are hurling wild accusations against governors who are trying to contain the damage inflicted on their own residents by President Biden’s reckless policies. The administration’s cynical strategy is to deflect attention from a border crisis of its own making and cast Governors Abbott and DeSantis in particular as inhumane villains.
In remarks that President Biden delivered on September 15th at the 45th Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Gala, the president falsely claimed that “Republicans are playing politics with human beings, using them as props” and that what they are doing is “un-American.” He then shamelessly propagated the big lie that “we have a process in place to manage migrants at the border. We’re working to make sure it’s safe and orderly and humane.”
The border is out of control. There is no orderly process to speak of as the Biden administration recklessly pursues its disastrous catch-and-release policy. And to assert that the Biden administration is working to make sure that the conditions for the illegal immigrants are safe and humane defies reality.
With its open border policies, the administration is encouraging desperate migrants to make the dangerous trek from their homelands to the United States. Some die along the way. Others are beaten and raped by cartel gang members. Virtually all illegal immigrants face exploitation by cartels who demand money and services as conditions for enabling the immigrants to cross the border into the United States. Over 1,200 migrants have died on American soil since President Biden took office.
Oblivious to the humanitarian crisis that the Biden administration’s immigration policies have brought about, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned the Republican governors’ efforts to bring attention to the resulting strain on community resources. She called the governors’ transport of illegal immigrants up north “a cruel, premeditated political stunt” and said that the migrant children “deserve better than being left on the streets of D.C. or being left in Martha’s Vineyard.”
The migrant children deserve better than the Biden administration’s mishandling of unaccompanied children in federal custody, which included housing children in facilities that officials in the Office of Refugee Resettlement described as “run like disaster camps” lacking basic services. “As child welfare professionals with combined decades of experience working with (unaccompanied children), we, the (Office of Refugee Resettlement) field staff supervisors, have become growingly alarmed at the erosion of child-welfare centered approaches within the UC program,” an internal memo quoted by CNN stated.
Hillary Clinton added to her lengthy list of irresponsible statements when she accused Governor DeSantis of “literally human trafficking” by sending illegal immigrants on a flight to plush Martha’s Vineyard. “I happen to believe still the majority of Americans are good-hearted and generous, and when people end up on their doorstep in need, they’re going to respond,” including by feeding and housing them.
If so, where were Barack and Michelle Obama when the migrants needed them? Surely, the Obamas could have found space to house at least some of the migrants in their twenty-nine-acre home on Edgartown Great Pond with its seven bedrooms.
“These people will love the fact the immigrants have been dropped off on their island, because now they can feel like part of the solution, helping these few people,” said one longtime Martha’s Vineyard resident. “But they’d never let them into their houses unless they were working.” She called them “phonies.”
California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has staked out an extreme position to build up his leftwing progressive credentials. He asked the Biden Justice Department to examine whether transporting migrants across the country could be considered kidnapping and even a violation of federal racketeering law.
The accusations of human trafficking and kidnapping are downright ridiculous, especially since the Biden administration itself was behind more than seventy flights transporting illegal immigrants from the southern border to Jacksonville Florida alone in the dead of night. The Biden administration has also flown planeloads of underage migrants into suburban New York.
Apparently, leftists have no problem when the Biden administration secretly dumps illegal immigrants in the dark on unprepared communities without notice. But when red state governors decide to transport a relatively small number of illegal immigrants to self-proclaimed sanctuaries in the light of day, pandemonium erupts on the Left, which their friends in the media amplify. Total hypocrisy.
