Comedians who used to be considered heroes by liberals for offending the religious feelings of conservatives, if they lived long enough have become woke villains.
John Cleese, who goes all the way back to the 1948 Show, has lived long enough.
There was a time when Life of Brian offended Christians and Jews. That time was 1979.
The Catholic archdiocese of New York, plus three distinguished Jewish organisations – the Rabbinical Alliance of America, the Union of Orthodox Rabbis and the Council of Syria and Near Eastern Sephardic Communities – have condemned the film.
The Catholic archdiocese has called Life of Brian a “blasphemy”, adding that it was a “crime against religion which holds the person of Christ up to comic ridicule.”
Fast forward to 2023 and Life of Brian has to be censored to avoid offending the wokes over a joke that was originally mocking male leftist feminists that accidentally ended up ruthlessly deconstructing the political embrace of the transgender.movement and its senseless fight for the right of men to be women
Monty Python star John Cleese insists he never said that he would remove a politically incorrect scene from a stage adaptation of Life of Brian, even though the film’s 1979 sensibilities will not draw quite the laughs it once did, owing to the rise of trans issues awareness.
Cleese claims it was “misreported” that he was planning to cut the “Loretta” scene for an upcoming stage adaptation of the religious satire film. Instead, he said he has “no intention” of removing it.
The scene in question features a male character declaring that he wants to be woman named “Loretta,” and wants to have a child. Cleese’s character tells the man that the notion is ridiculous, while another suggets that they all advocate for his right to childbearing.
“I want to be a woman. … It’s my right as a man,” the character claims “I want to have babies… It’s every man’s right to have babies if he wants them.” After Cleese’s protest, the character snaps, “Don’t you oppress me!”
Obviously, times have changed the impact of that humor.
Obviously.
Let’s pause for a moment for the obvious note that lefties have become everything they pretended to be against. Conservatives objected to blasphemy in movies on religious grounds, lefties do so on social grounds.
The typical line is “the times have changed”.
What that really means is that some things may not be said and some jokes may not be told. There’s a temporary amnesty for jokes that were made at the time. So long as they’re left in the past.
Cleese was reported to have asked American actors at a read-through whether the “Loretta” scene should be dropped. He was allegedly told that the joke was no longer a fit in these times.
“So here you have something there’s never been a complaint about in 40 years, that I’ve heard of, and now all of a sudden we can’t do it because it’ll offend people. What is one supposed to make of that?”
Cleese said in a tweet that his comments were meant to relate what he was advised, not that he would actually do the cut.
“A few days ago I spoke to an audience outside London. I told them I was adapting the Life of Brian so that we could do it as a stage show (NOT a musical ). I said that we’d had a table-reading of the latest draft in NYC a year ago and that all the actors – several of them Tony winners – had advised me strongly to cut the Loretta scene. I have, of course, no intention of doing so.”
Quite a shift from the 1979 articles cheering on the offensiveness to the 2023 articles glumly warning that the jokes no longer fit the times.
What does ‘fitting the times’ really mean? It means that the jokes no longer fit the social agenda.

Identifying males and females was one of the great triumphs of science. Even though probabilistically there were a few outliers, 98% or 99% of cases fit into the male or female categories. There were a lot of animal studies where females lived longer than males, for example. That came from reading the 1960 Encyclopaedia some decades ago when I was off the internet for some reason, so I read a lot of the old animal studies, amongst other things.
The thing that gets me now is, even though it is only 98% or 99% accurate, not 100%, it still counted as science.

By the late 70s Jews and Christians were no longer taking religion all that seriously. If they still had been Billy Joel’s “Only The Good Die Young” would have set off a pogrom.
Billy needs to get back to his Rock and Roll rebel roots and re-release that song with the updated lyrics, “Come out, Muslima don’t let me wait, you FGM girls start much too late”.

Cleese is a lefty but I give him credit. He has integrity.
Women do tend to live longer than men. Maybe testosterone poisons us guys and the hard labor we do is harmful. We both know how women are regularly coercing us to do chores. “fix the fence, unplug the chimney, kill the ivy in the backyard, trim the trees, mount the bird feeder where the squirrels can’t get at it, kill the mice in the house, etc.”
It never ends. My mother did all those things but chicks you’re involved with have endless demands.

Yeah, testosterone is something like a poison.

I’d say, biologically, the only category beyond male and female is “deformed.”

It does not matter how hard they try, TG’s will always be outsmarted by XX and XY.

I also liked the scene where the revolutionaries were meeting in secret and while railing against the Romans, but kept coming up with benefits of Roman rule. I was generally libertarian at the time, and it made me think about it more.
One of my favorite scenes was when Cleese as an officer of the watch caught Brian writing graffiti, corrected his Latin, and made him write it everywhere.
