Social media hasn’t been around for very long, but the truth of what is have revealed about so many people has been transformative and leads to the basic, but important, question: Did social media inspire people to become awful trolls, or did it just give a megaphone to expose so many people truly horrible?
It’s the chicken and the egg and, like that question, the answer doesn’t really matter, the end result is what we have to deal with no matter what. But you do have to feel badly for our species sometimes, and a little disgusted that some members of it are capable of being something so gross, such sickening examples of humanity that you have to wonder if it’s worth it.
The latest example of this is sad story of the sub crushed by the immense pressure down by the Titanic. People died, people you’ve never heard of and wouldn’t have had they not died tragically (pictured above). Yet, for reasons known only to them, some human beings (a term I use loosely) have decided the world needs to know they’re awful people who deserve being ostracized; a shunning – and deserve any and every bad thing that comes their way.
How do you know families are grieving and things, “What were the political donations of these people?” to determine whether or not you’re willing to be a decent human being about it?
That happened over at The New Republic this week. The left-wing birdcage liner is typical of the left, basing their concern for other humans on their political beliefs. Some murder victims don’t matter if they can’t be used to advance their agenda, for example. Not a lot of interest on the left for the thousands of young black men murdered in Chicago, but all the chips are pushed to the center of the table when a police officer kills someone fighting to get the cop’s gun while high as a kite, provided the skin colors of those involved lines up with the progressive food pyramid of victimhood usefulness.
Imagine your boss tells you to look into the political donations of people being impacted by a tragedy; would you do it? Or would you tell your boss you don’t see the relevance of this as families are suffering?
Someone called Daniel Strauss didn’t stand up for common decency when given that chance this week, or he cooked up the concept himself. How it came to be doesn’t really matter as much as an article entitled, “OceanGate CEO Missing in Titanic Sub Had History of Donating to GOP Candidates,” was written by him and published by TNR.
No one knew if they people on the sub were dead or alive, but leftists based their interest and concern for the story on irrelevant sideshows like this and the fact that the passengers were rich, since it cost about a quarter million dollars each to go there.
Questioning the rationale of going to the bottom of the ocean to look at a rotting shell of an old ship is one thing, implying to an audience that it’s ok that these people suffer because their politics is disagreeable to you is something else. There’s a time for that, if that’s something you’re compelled to do, later. Those political records will exist long after the families of those lost deal with their pain, there’s no need to add to if for clicks. I’d rather drink hemlock than write a piece dancing on an open grave while people are suffering.
But this is what the left does constantly. When there’s a mass shooting, the vultures assume motive, skin color and sexuality of the killer, tweeting and prognosticating their fetishized agenda demands before there’s an accurate body count. Then, when the story comes out of how the killer isn’t white or isn’t straight, the interest wanes quickly and it’s like it never happened. Is there a left-wing news organization pushing for the release of the trans-killer in Nashville’s manifesto, for example?
Mention Ronald Reagan to a committed leftist and they’ll fly off, as if possessed, on a Tourette’s tirade about a man who’s been dead for more than 20 years and out office for more than 30. They are angry he existed; they are angry anyone who disagrees with them exists and any level of contempt or disgusting behavior is justified when dealing with people who stand in their way; who won’t conform. There is no equivalent on the right – when Jimmy Carter dies, aside from anonymous troll accounts being shocking for its own sake, there will not be grave dancing. National Review will not run a piece on just how horrible he was as President, or as a man, when he passes. They will eventually run pieces on how bad he was, but not in the wake of his death the way the left works.
Maybe we on the right should, but it’s just not who we are. We see suffering and seek to help it pass, where the left sees it and wonders how they can use it. When you view tragedy as opportunity you lose your humanity over time. I don’t know if it eventually comes back, but I do know that it’s gone for activist left and there’s nothing about them or how they act that indicates they give a damn about it.

There was also some right wing talk about the owner of the sub stating that he didn’t want “50 year old white guys”
J.J. Sefton says
Except that it has relevance insofar as the questioning of competence and – wait for it – “meritocracy” which is quite topical, and in many ways, crucial to the proper functioning of a successful society. We are abandoning meritocracy and competence in favor of skin color, sexuality, etc.
The tragedy of what happened with this submarine, if what the CEO said about “old white men” is accurate, underscores all of this. Who donated to whom has no bearing on the events at all.

Gee, you just described my left-wing sister. With her, everything and everybody are judged through a radical left lens. If you aren’t liberal, she hates you. And she was raised in a conservative home. It was the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war in the 60s that deeply affected her and she never grew out of it. I used to say to my dad, “whatever happened to Mary?” She is so extreme that she has turned her own family against me, especially because I am an evangelical Christian who has never uttered a word to her or her family about my faith. Now, who is the real bigot?
TRex says
A similar situation. I had an in-law call me, out of the blue, and just start raking me for being a Trump “fan”. We never really had any political conversations of substance so I asked why was this call being made. The answer was pure and simple Trump hatred and I guess the assumption was I was bigtime MAGA because I didn’t express any support for the leftist agenda.. Anyway, I scolded her for heaping this raft of shit on me for no reason, hung up and haven’t talked to her ever since. .Hatred seems to be an obsession with these LIV’s.

And that has happened to me more than once. In a call with an older cousin, I refused to say I would be eager to watch an anti-Trump hour on TV (something about Stormy Daniels) and the hissing began on the end end of the phone line. Not only was Trump verbally attacked, but my mother ( no longer alive) was cursed out and accused of totally bizarre crimes.
TDS may be a form of psychosis. It sure isn’t in touch with reality.
I hung up eventually (oh why did I listen for the minutes I did?) and never talked to her again.
TRex says
I wonder how many right-wing extremists pick up the phone and call their leftist relatives to chew them out for their politics? Perhaps a good way to estimate would be to observe street protests to see which group marches peacefully and which group screams like wounded animals, destroys property and assaults their political rivals. The ones not brazen enough to take to the streets are the ones making the phone calls.

When I suggested to my woke AF sister that the target dates for reaching net zero carbon emissions are a fantasy and in the meantime have the potential to do real economic harm to those already struggling, her glib, supercilious response is that “why set any goals at all then? People need to be forced to make better choices, I want a future for my children, yada, yada, yada…”
This is someone w/his & her guzzlers parked in the driveway (even though they have only 1 remainng child still at home) who blasts the air conditioner full force as soon as the temperature inches above 70 degrees F, whose teenaged athlete son goes through a couple dozen of plastic bottles of special “vitamin water” every week eats steak & hamburgers by the cartload and who is tethered to her smart phone 24/7. And that’s just for openers.
She was also a big fan of Covid lockdowns and now says “”…we should extend some grace to everybody involved since we were dealing with something no one understood…” and continues to insist that “Sweden’s death rates were super high”. She’s impervious to facts or logic that don’t gibe w/the approved narrative.

Heck, National Review will probably run a story about how wonderful Jimmy Carter was. I ended my subscription 8 years ago.
John Reese says
There is no way the Political Left can say things were not better than when Trump was in office, if they’re honest.
The problem is they are in reality marxists, and they don’t even know it is many cases.
In their eyes, marxism/communism is utopia. And if you wonder why these people are just dumb and/or ignorant, just look at the educational system, who have been promoting this for most of my most of my long life, or even longer. And if you doubt how long they have been doing this, look at the people around FDR.

This article was excellent in content, as one would expect from Derek Hunter, however there were enough typos and errata that it is very surprising coming from him.

I’ve been seeing more and more of that everywhere, including in prestigious print journals. Don’t understand why and I am beginning to think I might need new glasses.

Proverbs 24:17-18
King James Version
17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:
18 Lest the Lord see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

I live in the leftist of leftist areas – Montgomery County, MD. I can assure you that Leftist think they are the smartest and bestest people anywhere in the known universe. I can also assure you that they are not. Not even close. These people with their “Hate Has No Home Here” lawn signs would put Republicans into, at best, re-education camps in the blink of an eye if they could. Vicious, small-minded, unknowledgeable (they may be intelligent IQ-wise but know nothing they don’t get in the lead paragraph of stories in the incredibly biased The Washington Post or from some braindead CNN talking head) is more like it.
Lightbringer says
Until the news of the implosion finally came out, so many people around the world were praying for these men, who were total strangers to them. During that period, there was still just the slightest sliver of hope, and so many capable people with different skills were coming together for a technologically unique rescue effort. For that short time I thought, “Well, finally people are realizing that we are all part of the same family, the human family.” As usual I was pathetically naive and utterly wrong.
John Blackman says
the same mindset affects muslims the world over , more so in western nations . that the left seeks to have them as bedfellows tells you a lot about their total depravity .

This is moderately related as it pertains to “Republicans” and those who vote Republican.
She lives in a glorious senior facility in a premier part of Newport Beach, California.
She is a Democrat and we have had our fights over I am stupid because I voted for President Trump.
Anyway she said she is on the fence now but when she votes she does her homework, but she say, there
are republicans where she lives that copy each others ballots and vote for the same republicans.
So therefore republicans are either stupid, lazy, insincere, and whole millions of Republicans, conservatives
judged due to two old women who copies their ballot in 2022. ??
