About a decade and a half ago, death threats aimed at members of Congress went into overdrive.
There had always been the occasional threatening phone call, but goosed by Facebook and an aggressive media, the number and scale of the threats exploded and even escalated into real-world violence.
Threatening a member of Congress is a federal offense. But much of the federal justice system now seems to operate on double standards.
The Biden Justice Department just issued a press release congratulating themselves for locking up a guy who sent violent threats to Rep. Maxine Waters (who has her own history of threatening rhetoric).
Meanwhile, Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana claims that the DOJ and the FBI refused to go after a man who made even more explicit threats to him and his family.
Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) was left threatening messages by Aaron Thompson, who was later sentenced to two years of probation by the local district attorney in Indiana, but the new letter raises questions about why the U.S. Attorney, which normally handles threats to members of Congress, did not prosecute the case.
“Three daughters. Hey, hey, hey, three bullets hey, hey, hey one wife yay. Oh yeah, yeah, we’ll give her two bullets..” Thompson said in one threatening voicemail, according to the letter.
FBI agents visited Thompson’s house, where, according to the letter by Banks and sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland in December, he “admitted he had threatened me and my family with violence because he disagreed with my political beliefs.”
“When Capitol Police referred the criminal case against Aaron Thompson to the U.S. Attorney for Northern District of Indiana, they declined to prosecute despite clear evidence that Thompson violated federal law,” Banks wrote.
Banks is running for the open Senate seat in Indiana.
Garland, according to Banks, has made it a priority to prosecute threats to members of Congress and Banks asked why the DOJ didn’t pursue prosecution in his situation when similar threats made against California Rep. Eric Swalwell were prosecuted.
Last week, Attorney General Garland penned an op-ed decrying political violence.
That’s “political violence” of the wrong kind. Threatening a Republican though is just social justice.

Eric Swallowell? Is he still running around with Madame Feng Feng, or has he found a new Chinese spy?

Not a double standard.
Its making a statement – we’re in power any you’re not
That means we get to choose who and what to prosecute or to not prosecute

Unless you’re a Democrat. And then it doesn’t matter.
But if you’re a Republican? What you wrote is the absolute truth, these days.

You have a way with words, Muggs! 🙂

Notice she has a very nice house outside her district. That is another way politicians get rich, by special deals on housing. I used to walk by daily the house of a local politician in a new housing development he approved. His house was like a castle, twice the size and height of any other house in the development 🙂
And it would be easy for the developers to just “forget” to bill him for his mortgage 🙂

I loved it when recently Rep Gaetz reminded Garland that he is not sitting on the SCOTUS. LOL.
Jeff Bargholz says
Gaetz. That guy is great. I saw that exchange he had with Gayland. He butt reamed him.
I just wish Congress would start prosecuting lying witnesses and other criminals instead of January sixth political prisoners.

It is not just threats or actions by civilians against Congress. Within Congress itself there is what is now the regular order. Any Leftist in Congress can say or do anything to any non-Leftist [I won’t say Conservative because that is too small a sample in real life] in Congress and not only will nothing be done to the Leftist, they will be applauded by the media and the non-Leftists will hide.
No non-Leftist in Congress, regardless of rank or position, will functionally oppose ANYTHING the Left does by any legal or parliamentary means. They will talk a good game to the proles sometimes, but even if they are in the majority they submit.

Subotai was a good general. He knew how to use those mounted archers of his and devastate foes.
I’d have liked to read about a showdown between him and Alexander the Great.
My money would be on Alexander, though. That guy NEVER lost a battle or war. He always figured out a way to win.
TruthLaser says
Major General (Br.) JFC Fuller’s 1960 book credited Alexander as politically astute in building his empire. He used rewards and punishments to deter resistance and encourage surrender and loyalty.
Algorithmic Analyst says
Yeah, I read something Liddell-Hart wrote about Subotai, some decades ago.
Alexander was also a great strategist. “The Generalship of Alexander the Great” was one of my favorite books.
I’ve been looking for books on Hannibal. I have a new one that looks promising.
Sulla is one of my favorites, I have 2 books on him I am reading.
Jeff Bargholz says
“No better friend, no worse enemy,” right? Sulla was cool and he went out the same way I’m going out (although I’m not proud of it.) In complete drunken dissolution. He went out banging the Ancient Roman starlets of his day, as you know. Not a bad way to go out. I can think of a LOT of worse ways. Julius Caesar, for example. 🙂 Or Crassus. That poor bastard was likely tortured to death. Fuck that shit.
There’s a Netflix series called “The Roman Empire” that’s quite good. In one episode it has the Parthians forcing some sort of boiling substance down Crassus’s throat. It looked very painful.
Algorithmic Analyst says
Yeah. I found out recently that Crassus was actually a good general when fighting in the traditional Roman style. But apparently he didn’t realize that style was absurd when fighting the Parthians.
The Parthians are said to have poured molten gold down his throat in order to mock his riches.
Steve Kardas says
In addition the release of that maniac John Hinckley is another disgusting display of political violence against conservatives. It was done to send the message that attempting to assassinate a popular Republican Presidents is no biggy and you will be forgiven at some point. Advice to Donald Trump is to redouble your security.
“No man no problem” -Stalin
Perry Bonney says
This legal double-standard and weaponization of government coincided with the inauguration of the first president to be born after WWII – Bill Clinton.
I remember reading the article that first pointed out about Bill Clinton having that distinction, but I sure didn’t know just how that distinction would manifest itself in the coming years.
But, boy, did we ever find out.
Even Bush 43 did cocaine and had a DUI.
We just need to find out where to look for people like Trump, I guess. Hopefully, in the meantime, Trump will spend the next 4 years grooming someone as VP, who is not afraid of standing up to the Democrats.
Beez says
The only President whose VP was smarter than he was, was Warren G. Harding. Very few VP’s ever become President unless it’s by the death of the President while in office.
In the case of JFK, his brother tried to warn him.
