Bringing the Emergencies Act into play meant that Canada was supposedly facing an unprecedented crisis caused by the Freedom Convoy that the state had to turn to the use of what were wartime powers to cope with the threat.
Now, Trudeau has announced that, “Today, after careful consideration, we’re ready to confirm that the situation is no longer an emergency. Therefore, the federal government will be ending the use of the Emergencies Act.”
Careful consideration indeed.
If all the emergency involved was arresting protesters and towing vehicles, then there was no emergency to begin with.
Ending the use of the Emergencies Act, after initially threatening to extend it, just shows that the use of it was illegitimate all along. An actual emergency isn’t one that can be ended so quickly or so easily.
What Trudeau actually wanted was to unleash authoritarian powers to shut down a protest that was making him look bad. And once that was done, it was over.
The only emergency here was a political emergency. And a grotesque abuse of power by an authoritarian leader.
