“An attorney for Michael Cohen is backing away from confident assertions he made that Cohen has information to share with investigators that shows Trump knew in 2016 of Russian efforts to undermine Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton,” the Washington Post reports.
“Lanny Davis, a spokesman and attorney for Cohen, said in an interview this weekend that he is no longer certain about claims he made to reporters on background and on the record in recent weeks about what Cohen knows about Trump’s awareness of the Russian efforts.”
I am absolutely shocked that a Clintonite would offer up a baseless smear targeting Trump to the media. Next thing you’ll tell me that the Clinton campaign invented the entire idea of a Russian conspiracy, then peddled it to the media and to its allies in the government.
While winking and playing at plausible deniability.
“So Michael Cohen does not have information that President Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians beforehand or even after?” CNN’s Anderson Cooper asked Davis in an interview.
“No, he does not,” replied Davis, a close ally of the Clintons.
“Well, I think the reporting of the story got mixed up in the course of a criminal investigation. We were not the source of the story. And the question of a criminal investigation, the advice we were given, those of us dealing with the media is that we could not do anything other than stay silent,” Davis continued.
