The tariff doomer hype promised utter catastrophe.
Trump tariffs: When consumers should expect inflation, price hikes to hit wallets – CNBC
Nearly 90% of Americans expect tariffs to raise prices, Gallup poll finds – CBS News
I wonder who told them to expect that?
Trump’s Tariffs Would Boost Inflation, Shrink the Economy, Trump’s tariff plan amounts to a $3 trillion tax hike – Senate Committee on the Budget
Tariffs May Push Up Inflation Just As It Was Getting Better – Investopedia
Trump’s Tariff Would Cost the Typical American Household Roughly $1,500 Each Year – Center for American Progress
Trump’s tariffs could cost American households $5,200 annually – Center for American Progress
Which one was it? $5,200 or $1,500?
Well the numbers are in and the hype is dead.
Trump tariffs have little impact on prices so far, defying grim forecasts – Politico
Inflation eased after Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs, defying fears – ABC News
The experts win again.
Fed Governor Adriana Kugler said Monday that the administration’s new taxes on imports are still “pretty high” and that she expects inflation to rise and growth to slow soon.
Any day now, says a former fellow with the Center for American Progress nominated by Biden.
They want America to fail. If it succeeds, it’ll raise questions about them, won’t it?
This reminds me of the following joke. A guy jumps off the balcony of his 10th floor apartment. While on the way down a person on their 4th floor balcony asks “how’s it going?” The guy responds “so far , so good.”
I was a critic of Modern Monetary Theory. No, inflation did not take off right away. Supporters of MMT pointed to the lack of inflation as proof of the policy’s effectiveness right up until inflation took off.
Many things, e.g. monetary policy, e.g. adjustments to equilibriums work with variable lags.
Trump has blinked many times on tariffs. He’s suspended many of the tariffs he originally imposed.. The markets, where people have real money at stake, respond negatively to the tariffs and positively to suspension of the tariffs.
I am not fed up with, but instead inspired to respond to, assertions that anyone critical of Trump’s tariffs wants “America to fail.” It is a sad commentary that any criticism of any Trump policy is irrefutable proof the critic has to be a liberal Communist who hates America and who should move to another
This brings me to post #5 from my office door.
“If diversity is so unassailably desirable, why is there such a conspicuous lack of white males in so many college Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Offices? Given the demonstrable lack of Republicans in so many academic departments, should we conclude Republicans aren’t welcome? Shouldn’t colleges be seeking viewpoint diversity?”
Does this look like the posting of a liberal?
It looks like the first sane comment you’ve ever posted.
I’ve got a file of your comments. Here’s one:
“The WSJ is whacking off its retarded readers. How are Americans going to get “whacked” by tariffs on goods they don’t need or even want? ”
Brilliant stuff! Keep it coming!
And you disagree with those facts how……….?
“Goods they don’t need or even want?” Then why were they buying them? I can tell this is going to be good. We’ll wait!
Like President Trump said the the Canadian Prime Minister, “we don’t need or want your steel and cars.”
So you buy a lot of cheap Chinese crap from Walmart, do you? My ass. China broke under Trump’s tariffs and agreed to drop its own tariffs.
Trump has not blinked on tariffs
Correct. Anyone paying attention knew we were watching ‘Art of the Deal.’
From a recent Wall Street Journal, which according to one commenter is no longer conservative:
The Great Trump Tariff Rollback
The President started a trade war with Adam Smith. He lost.
By The Editorial Board
May 12, 2025
“Rarely has an economic policy been repudiated as soundly, and as quickly, as President Trump’s Liberation Day tariffs—and by Mr. Trump’s own hand. Witness the agreement Monday morning to scale back his punitive tariffs on China—his second major retreat in less than a week. This is a win for economic reality, and for American prosperity.”
The Wall Street Journal has never been conservative and nothing it writes is trustworthy. It’s a rag. Not as terrible as the NY Slimes but quite terrible.
Yet another mindnumbingly dumb assertion.
Entertain us again with how exporters to the U.S. won’t raise prices after a tariff. That was some unintentionally funny stuff.
Here’s a few of your gem postings:
“Being stupid enough to read the Wall Street Cornhole is nothing to brag about. That’s like bragging about watching MSDNC or “The View.”
“Only neocons and libertarians read that rag, and they’re all scumbags.”
So Why has the WSJ reversed it’s opinions about President Trump’s tariffs? Now it sez they’re successful.
Cretin.
Someone obviously has trouble understanding what I just posted above from the WSJ.
Tell us again how you don’t want to make anymore money because you don’t want your ex-wife to get any. Brilliant life plan.
After that, tell us about the court order. https://unicourt.com/case/ca-scl-farida-bargholz-vs-jeffrey-bargholz-844615 Isn’t public information great!
Tell us about the court order for support. Aren’t public records great!
Here’s another of your gem comments: “Being stupid enough to read the Wall Street Cornhole is nothing to brag about. ”
No doubt you’ll provide a tsunami of actual evidence that it is stupid people who read the Wall Street Journal. But which is it: the Wall Street Journal or the Wall Street Cornhole?
The WSJ is also pro-globalism, were big proponents of NAFTA and are the definition of neocons. Neocons never saw a war they weren’t interested in getting America involved in. They regard war as an investment opportunity to plumb up their investment portfolios (neither they nor their children are the ones who’s lives are at risk in a war.)
Trust me, I know what I’m talking about. I had a continuous WSJ subscription from 1980 up until 2015 when I finally cancelled. Trump is anathema to everything they stand for and is bad for their investment portfolios. .
The Globalists were already trying to wipe out the middle class back in Ancient Rome. I was just reading about that in Mommsen.
Stupid people last forever, don’t they?
All true. The WSJ is a joke and enemy of the people. None of its stupid and anti-American predictions ever come true. And Wall Street bankers are scum.
You can’t be so dumb as to claim that Trump was going to require a country to pay 145 % tariffs or that it was anything other than a negotiation tool? Do you really believe this carp? Nobody is that big of a fool. Why waste time insulting people’s intelligence when the only thing it does is make you look like a clown?
And the market plummeting on his “Liberation Day” and the subsequent rebound after Trump blinked and backed off was just coincidence. Who’s the clown?
The “market” is up, you dumbass liar. 42% as of today,. Eat it, scumfag.
Not that ordinary Americans care. We care about our quality of life, which includes prices of goods and services which President Trump has lowered way the fuck down since we got rid of Alzheimer Joe’s handlers.
Sucks to be a D-Bag in 2025. America hates you. The whole world hates you.
Yes, and it worked. China and America now have no tariff policies. Trump broke Xi like a cheap Chinese import.
The WSJ at one point was very conservative and a sound read on money and investments. It wouldn’t have sold otherwise.
What happened to the WSJ is also what happened to The National Review, PJ Media and other erstwhile conservative publications. They were subsumed by neocons and RINOs. Everything the neocons and RINOs touch eventually turns to sh*t.
The WSJ in particular, priced themselves out of readership. The pro globalist articles and opinions didn’t help either.
People buy crap all day every day.
And the WSJ always recommends blue chip stocks which are unstable and expensive. Smart people bought Newsmax shares at $10 bucks a pop when it went public and cleaned up. Today it’s worth $28 and although it fluctuates, it’s NEVER been only $10 bucks since it was introduced.
Anybody who follows the WSJ’s corrupt advice makes rich scumbags like bankers and hedge fund parasites richer and the middle class poorer. DUMB PEOPLE.
THe days the WSJ was reliable in any way are long gone.
Anyone who has done 10 minutes of research on tariffs would know they do not cause inflation. Only a fraction of the tariff actually gets passed on to the consumer and does not cause price hikes or inflation in the general economy. Want proof? Do 10 minutes of actual research, which doesn’t include watching MSNBC or reading the WSJ.
Anyone with any understanding of economic would recognize they do raise prices. That, contrary to what Jeff Bargjolz laughably asserts, is what they are intended to do, It makes it more likely consumers will now substitute domestic-produced goods. That shouldn’t be that hard to understand. How much, i.e. what “fraction” of the tax on gasoline is effectively paid for by the consumer? Ask someone who lives near the Illinois – Iowa border.
The actual fraction makes a big difference.
Is it a fact that Trump wants more investment in the U.S.? If so, I’m still waiting for one of the tariff defenders to explain how foreigners can get the U.S. dollars needed to invest i the U.S. if they do not have a trade surplus. I’m still waiting for an explanation as to why a capital account surplus is bad. Crickets!
Here’s #5 for the misnamed “Intrepid.: I just started reading The Triumph of Economic Freedom: Debunking the Seven Great Myths of American Capitalism by Professor Don Boudreaux and Phil Gramm. Do you think assigning that book to students would be to force a liberal perspective on them? You got nuthin’!
So why are prices going down, you fucking retard? Why did China cave to President Trump? Why can we afford basic necessities like eggs, gas and housing now thanks to President Trump?
Fuck, I hate neocon liars.
Free Trade is great in theory, but in practice, Mercantilist countries cheat.
Yes, and those cheaters are the ones President Trump has gone after. Isn’t it funny how he forces all of them to deal? The guy cracks me up. And the America hating D-Bags flip their wigs because he keeps winning.
I wish I had half his energy. The chick I was with last night was so enervated from recent stomach and uh, intestinal illness all she did was blow me and don’t do it long enough. I wish she had Trump’s energy. I drove almost to the edge of the city for a BJ and some home cooked food”? San Jose is over 181 square miles. It’s big.
Always make the bitches come to you. You want to be able to kick them out after they’re used up, not the other way ’round.
And who doesn’t hate mercantilist rip-off artists?
Yeah, funny thing is, cheating is generally left out of theoretical discussions. Yet in practice, cheating is the first thing that takes place.
Yes! Exactly! The cheaters won’t even make a deal most times unless they have plenty of preconceived terms to cheat.
Once upon a time, the WSJ was a proper newspaper.
And.
Once upon a time, America was a proper country.
Anyone who believes otherwise is not paying attention.
America is the greatest nation ever built. And the best mere mortals can do with a Divine Ruler governing the body politic.
But it’s also been under fire – and taking damage from the “Left” for decades. Many honest and decent folks swallowed the Progressive poison in the late 19thC, and chose to betray the nation’s core culture rather than defending the tried and true.
So – over time – truth, justice, and the American way became nothing more than a slogan for a comic book hero rather than the defining compass for our great nation.
Victor David Hanson can say it better than I, but the bottom line is that all of our institutions today are corrupt or false or damaged or deformed.
And all means ALL.
So we went from a state in which even the “Left” had a few good ideas to our modern situation in which no one is above suspicion of being flat out wrong.
The only absolute on the Right – is that we’re the majority with good intentions
While on the Left – everything they believe is wrong. Even what’s “true” – because it’s all dedicated to hating us and everything we do.
All true. But I hate to tell you that “Truth, justice and the American way” no longer has the “American way” in the motto. DC dropped it from the Superman comics and made him a globalist.
I’m a comics geek even though I don’t look like one. I read “Superman” and “Action Comics” regularly. I’m a nerd who actually gets laid regularly. But the lefties eventually poison everything they come in contact with, as you noted.
LOL … thank you, Jeff, for the clarification of Superman’s motto.
I see today’s combox is dominated by the tariff debate.
Save us from keyboard warriors.
Trump’s tariffs are both a “weapon” in his ‘Art of the Deal’ approach, and an attempt to balance the imbalance of our trade deficits.
As a weapon, tariffs give the president leverage to renegotiate anti-American “trade deals”
that are little more than “They Win and Our Politicians Get Kickbacks” deals.
Anyone who has hosted a Chinese spy delegation or engaged in OJT for Chinese or other foreign industrial spies …
… and endured their laughter and smirking
… knows full well what “trade deficit” means.
If you haven’t – and I have many times
– you’re a fool.
Endless trade deficits – constantly rising – across the board in every single area of commerce and production (with insufficient exceptions to even worth noting)
… show the deliberate and intentional sabotage of the nation’s industrial base
AND in particular:
Targeting the culture and organization that not only provides talented and brilliant and strong humans to constantly supply a powerful workforce – and to allow those humans to rise through merit
– until their ideas become the future and push the economy forward
is something only an enemy would do.
And only government could do it.
All the way back in the 60s – the Left began a campaign to deindustrialize America and to defeat it for communism. The plans had existed for decades, but the 60s is when the weasels began to achieve results.
And so – long before Carter’s Dept of Education Destruction turned us into a nation of imbeciles with a trillion in student loan debt for gender studies (ie – a document proving one’s disloyalty to G-d, America, and truth) …
America was on a course of deindustrialization.
Endless punishment for Americans. Endless reward for our enemies.
And it wasn’t good for anyone.
Ask the black slave children in the Congo if they think solar panels are worth their lives.
Ask the Chinese peasants if they think letting the CCP eat America’s lunch helps them.
Ask any flyover American if his Walmart goods compensate him for all of the opportunities, jobs, businesses, or dreams he has lost –
…. to make our politician’s bank accounts fat with our money.
Many thanks Dan !!!!!
Thanks AA,
Just trying to be clear.
And more honest than I can be IRL.
If I said this to anyone outside a small circle of friends
there’d be Land of insufficient light to pay.
Here’s Trump on the war in Ukraine. (No, Fox News didn’t highlight this.)
“Before I even arrive at the Oval Office, I will have the disastrous war between Russia and Ukraine settled.”
Now, let me guess the response, minus the name-calling and gay jokes, “Trump was only joking.” Did I nail it?
C’mon, how funny was it when a frustrated President Trump said to Putin “Just stop!” Apparently, Putin isn’t a good listener.
Apparently Putin is listening, dumbass. Just like Pakistan and India listened.
I guess, based on the (pathetic) logic of many of those commenting, that both Thomas Sowell and Milton Friedman are liberals and Communists who hate the U.S. and should move to another country.. It can’t possibly be that they just disagree with those who tariffs as desirable. Enjoy Intrepid!
“International trade is not a zero-sum contest. Both sides must gain or it would make no sense to continue trading. Nor is it necessary for experts of government officials to determine whether both sides are gaining. Most international trade, like most domestic trade, is done by millions of individuals, each of whom can determine whether the item purchased is worth what it cost and is preferable to what is available to others.” Thomas Sowell, Basic Economics
“We call a tariff a protective measure. It does protect; it protects the consumer very well against one thing. It protects the consumer against low prices…” Milton Friedman
And yet prices are getting lower, you retard. America used to enrich itself with trariffs. Left-wing scumbags want America to avoid imposing tariffs but love it it when foreign countries fuck us with them. You’re scum. Move to North Korea.
This is what happens when economic analysis is handled by a journalist who just cherry-picks quotes.
Amazing how “tariffs didn’t raise prices” is now floating around like it’s gospel as if the effects have already fully hit. Yale projects the 2025 tariffs will hike prices by 2.3% and cost the average household $3,800. Wharton says they’ll shrink the economy and cost a middle-class family $22K over their lifetime. The Tax Foundation calls it a $1,200 tax increase per household—because nothing says “lower inflation” like making everything more expensive.
Meanwhile, Walmart, Target, Ford, and others straight-up said, “Yep, we’re raising prices because of tariffs.” Even the Fed and S&P warned they’ll push inflation up. But hey, if we close our eyes and wish hard enough, maybe taxing imports will magically become deflationary.
Daniel Greenfield is a blogger focusing on the radical Left and Islamic terrorism. Maybe he should stay in his lane.
“Amazing” how President Trump’s tariffs have been working. Pff!
Not so amazing that Yale is a completely unreliable joke, like Harvard, Columbia and pretty much every university except Hillsdale.
Repeating nonsense from those complaining about their end of the deal.
None of those parties are reliable, and their numbers are easily dismissed.
eg. $3800/year or $1200 / year?
which is it?
for what goods?
for what households?
It’s just fear mongering.
