“Therefore, when we hear about stories coming out from you and your agency that everything is pretty good, you’re doing a great job,” said Rep. Elijah Cummings in a July 18 hearing with acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan.
“I guess you feel like you’re doing a great job. Right? Is that what you’re saying?” Cummings continued. “What does that mean? What does that mean when a child is sitting in their own feces, can’t take a shower! Come on, man. What is that about?”
C-SPAN did not give a decibel reading but Cummings was blasting away at high volume, particularly on the feces theme, to which he quickly returned. “Make sure they have diapers,” the Democrat told McAleenan. “Make sure they are not laying around defecating in some silver paper. Come on. We’re better than that.”
The Maryland Democrat also said, “I get tired of folks saying, ‘Oh, they just beating up on the Border Patrol. They just beating up on Homeland Security.’” As President Trump had it, that was exactly what Cummings was doing.
Trump was on record that detention centers at the border are “clean, efficient and well run, just very crowded.” By contrast, the president tweeted, Cummings was a “brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border” and his district “is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”
In addition, the president wondered, “Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!” The establishment media reacted in predictable style.
The president’s reference to a rat “infestation,” Victor Blackwell claimed on CNN, was “usually reserved for references to rodents and insects, but we’ve seen the president invoke ‘infestation’ to criticize lawmakers before. You see a pattern here?” For his part, Elijah Cummings was already on record that there was “no doubt” Trump is a racist after telling Reps. Omar, Tlaib et al that they should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
After the president’s beat-down, Baltimore native Nancy Pelosi called Cummings “a champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice” and “we all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership.” Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren went on record that “Donald Trump’s tweets are ugly and racist.” And so on, with Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen telling reporters “Elijah Cummings grew up facing racist bullies like Trump and learned to confront them with qualities unknown to Trump: courage and integrity.”
None of the Democrats cited any actual problems in Cummings’ district, and that bore a stark contrast to Bernie Sanders. In 2015, the Vermont socialist toured Baltimore and told reporters “Anyone who took the walk that we took around this neighborhood would not think you’re in a wealthy nation. You would think that you were in a Third World country.” Some Baltimore residents held signs reading, “We deserve safe and livable housing,” and Sanders told a group of pastors, “I didn’t see a decent grocery store around here. So what are moms feeding their kids?”
In 2016, Sanders charged that in Baltimore’s poor neighborhoods, “lifespans are shorter than people living under dictatorship in North Korea.” And as the contender for the Democrat nomination added, “Horribly, someone born in Baltimore’s poorest neighborhood can expect to live 20 years less than a person born in the wealthiest area.” Two years later, Baltimore ranked among the nation’s “rattiest cities,” with the worst murder rate among the 50 largest cities, and the second-highest crime rate.
Vermont is about 95 percent white and Baltimore 63.5 percent black, but Sanders’ Democrat rivals did not charge that Bernie Sanders was a racist for comparing Baltimore to North Korea and a Third World country. Sanders did not criticize Rep. Cummings, who has represented Maryland’s Seventh District since 1996, when Bill Clinton was president.
In 2013, Cummings’ oversight committee held hearings on John Beale, an EPA boss who claimed to be a secret agent with the CIA, maintained the ruse for a decade, and ripped off taxpayers for nearly $1 million. Cummings commended those who uncovered Beale’s scam but did not denounce the criminal with the same fervor he unleashed against Kevin McAleenan. He had done nothing wrong, and the U.S. Border Patrol was not created to house thousands of people illegally present in the United States.
The back story here is that Cummings, Pelosi and congressional Democrats are unwilling to work with the president to fix the border crisis. By allowing foreign nationals to exploit children as entry tickets, they have effectively manufactured the crisis. Many Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her “Squad,” want to abolish ICE and the border along with it.
When Trump speaks of deporting MS-13 murderers, Nancy Pelosi invokes their “spark of divinity.” By all indications, the Democrat Party believes everybody in the world has a right to come to the United States, stay forever, and live off U.S. taxpayers. Come on, man. We’re better than that.
