Catastrophic defeat.
Ireland, like Scotland, has largely been governed by leftists. And much of the ruling class had gotten behind two constitutional amendments redefining marriage and women.
The first concerned the definition of family, and they were asked to remove a reference to marriage as the basis “on which the family is founded” and replace it with a clause that said families can be founded “on marriage or on other durable relationships,” such as cohabiting couples and their children.
The second question proposed erasing a reference deemed outdated by referring to a women’s place as being in the home, which suggests they have a duty to take care of other people under their roof. It would have been replaced with broader language, including a clause recognizing care provided by family members for one another.
It’s not just that these amendments were rejected by voters, but how massively they were rejected.
In final results announced Saturday night, the amendment to change the constitutional definition of family was rejected by 67.7 percent of voters. The proposed changes on family care took an even harsher drubbing, with 73.9 percent against — the greatest defeat of an amendment in Irish constitutional history.
The political elites assumed that Ireland had been redefined, but apparently, the Irish were not consulted. What’s stunning is also how disproportionate the results were. The only place they seem to have succeeded was Dublin. It’s the equivalent of losing every place except New York City, LA and Washington D.C.
Then again the elites have learned from the first vote over the Lisbon Treaty that it’s dangerous to actually let the people vote without a sustained propaganda campaign and the takeaway by Ireland’s political elites is that they didn’t spend enough time propagandizing.

Not even the Irish are dumb ALL the time, and those people drink a lot.

Klaus Schwab was unavailable for comment, but was said to be “unamused”. How unfortunate.

Yes, If Klaus Doucheschwab isn’t a Blofeld Bond villain, I don’t know who is. The guy is even worse than Soros.
Goldfinger was the coolest villain, though. He didn’t piss around, he said what he meant. 007: “do you expect me to talk?” Ernst Stavro Blofeld: “No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!” Jimmy almost got his nuts cooked off by an industrial laser in that scene but managed to joke about it. Sean Connery was so cool.
Jeff Bargholz says
Oops! Goldfinger, not Ernie.

I’m wondering how the government will do a behind the scenes end-run to get what they wanted?…quietly, no press, down the road when nobody is watching?

You mean like some proposed ordinances voted on by the people here in American cities and states and, if their vote displeases the elite, the government going ahead and doing what they like anyway? That happens a lot in Democratic-controlled areas. The Irish vote won’t mean anything in the long run because the left will win eventually, if not now then ten, twenty, or a hundred years down the road. They always get what they want, eventually. They are nothing if not persistent.

The proposed amendments to the Irish constitution were of course about destroying the family in Ireland. Totalitarians cannot tolerate any rival sources of authority and so have to destroy the family and the church as independent institutions.
